I use my 12 ga for everything -- there's such a huge variety of shels available for 12's.
A lot of folks like a 20 ga because they are lighter/easier to swing and thus, faster to shoot.

I just started this pheasant hunting a few years back - 40 years I guess and I won't even guess how many birds I shot back when. But for knock'm down dead, so they won't run quite so much, I really like a 3" 12 gauge with 1 5/8 oz of six shot. Shoot for their head, or you'll hit'm in the butt. Jim

Ive hunted pheasant for over 35 years and what works for me is high brass #6 shot 12 or 20 gauge. I use modified choke if you hit em with the full load thell drop dead. Good luck

Atually High brass/low brass isnt true anymore. It does not acuretly descibe the speed/power of a shell.
What you need to be looking at is dram, FPS and quality of the shot used.

I prefer 12g its just so versitile.

In my 12 I use 3 loads
1 1/8 oz 6 at 1450 fps
1 1/4 oz 6 at 1440 fps
1 3/8 oz 5 at 1440 fps (back up others)
in my 20 I use 7/8 of 6 at 1400
In my 28 I use 3/4 oz 6 at 1330

12 or twenty is fine but in the past 10 yrs or so been after em for 30 I have switched to the 16 but for shot and shell in a 12 1 1/4 oz of 4's in the 16 1 1/8 oz of 4's and the 20 1 oz of 4's I have found that 4's will knock the daylights out of a bird with fewer hits than a 6 or 7 1/2

I use a 20ga or 28ga, this is more than enough gun for most situation.
