which breeds best
Want a dog thats friendly around kids and would have the abilities to follow a blood trail and easy to train, was thinking of a yellow lab, what do you think?

RE: which breeds best
a small Beagle would work great on all counts.

RE: which breeds best
I love Labs!
They are great around children and I have been reading on the training of blood-trailing. I guess it is possible with the Labs. Good luck in your search. OhioDuckHunter |
RE: which breeds best
Labs are great dogs, but when it comes to blood-trailing, nothing beats a bloodhound!! They love everybody and when it comes to training them to track a blood trail, there's very little training, if any. Its bred into them. I've used my older bloodhound to find a lost deer and all it took was me to put his nose to the spot where I shot it. I had looked for this deer for over 3 hours and it took him about 35 minutes to find it. They're amazing!! [8D]

the dog of your choice should be a drathaar.I seen one in action and decided i had to have one. They have to pass extremly hard tests in order to be able to breed them.one of those tests happens to be blood trailing. My drathaar is 7 months old and is very good with the kids we have a 3 month old baby and my puppy is very good with her i can even lay her ontop of him and he wont move so he dont hurt her.
the drathaar is awesome with waterfowl or upland game as well as rabbits.if you have any more questions you can email me at [email protected] |
RE: which breeds best
If you want a true senses of great versatile hunting dogs, you can't conclude your searc until you have looked at the Weimaraners. They are a great breed, all the way around.
They were originally used to bring down wounded big-game in Germany and have evolved to great bird dogs. They are still used in Europe for blood trails with Deer, Elk, Boar and others. But I have hunted waterfowl and every upland gamebird with them my whole life, and nothing can beat them. |
RE: which breeds best
beagle or walker hound

RE: which breeds best
Bloodhound without a dought

RE: which breeds best
Beagles are nice dogs. I grew up with them. But they are a like slamming your head against a wall to train properly. They smell a rabbit and they could be in the next county. Labs are ranked number 2 behind Newfounlands with kids and are one of the easiest dogs to train. Labradors are the way to go.

RE: which breeds best
I love labs they are great around kids and no other breed can match them on waterfowl (check the records on Field Champions and you'll see what I mean) . For trailing I dunno? Maybe. You can train them to do just about anything. Though for pure trailing I think a bloodhound would be the number one choice. They have wonderful personalities as well.

RE: which breeds best
With out a doubt....the american blackmouth cur. They are now a ukc breed, and is the smartest and easiest dogs to train in my opinion, and i currently also have a beagle/basset, walker coon hound and a feist. In the past ive owned sheps and labs. My dog will hunt close to bust pheasants and rabbits, tree squirrel in the day, coon at night as well or better that my hound, and hunt, catch, and bay hogs. They love kids and women, and are very protective of them and your house.

RE: which breeds best
Depends on the age of your kids. Personally, prefer beagles for any age kid.

RE: which breeds best
I would listen to Utahhunter. I as well have a Drat along with a brittany. There is no such thing as an easy dog/breed to train IMO. Some dogs are just more biddable than others when it comes to training time. Check out vdd-gna.org these dogs are not for everyone but they have the most natural ability that I have seen out of a hunting dog.

RE: which breeds best
I think most any dog would have the ability to follow a blood trail. I have had dogs in the family all our lives but last year got my first sporting dog....an Englsih Springer Spaniel. He's 2+ yrs old and is the friendliest, loving, most dedicated dog I have had. He loves to please his trainer (s), in this case my wife and I. I never had this breed before and I would not hesitate to advise most folks to look at this breed. They may not be for every one but I highly suggest looking into a Springer, so you don't deny yourself the opportunity to see what these friendly dogs bring to the family....Good Luck.

RE: which breeds best
My uncle had springer spaniels for the longest time and he loved to take those dogs bird hunting. They loved it too. They were great dogs around the house too. They were fun to hang out with.

RE: which breeds best
well i have to agree with benellibirdman. Go weim or stay home. I love mine she is a four-legged hunting machine. she just loves time in the feild strives to please and is almost human sometimes. I am baised as this is the only dog I have owned as an adult and am open to other ideas. If you don't have a lot of time to work with a dog this may not be your best option. they need exercise and attention. If you do you will be rewarded well for you effort. you can always do some research on the akc page akc.org or .com

RE: which breeds best
Turkeyfan,
The price you pay for your pup is the least amount of money you will spend on the dog throughout its lifetime. With labs, pointers, setters, etc. Your best bet is to spend the most amont of money you can afford toward a good blood line and proven parents in the HUNTING FIELD. When you go to purchase a true Drat (VDD Registered pup) you will not have to look at all the pups and evaluate. The breeder will give you the sex you want and that is it. Every dog in the litter will be a hunter. Some will be stronger at pointing, others maybe little better at rabbit tracking or water work. My point is if I am going to purchase a hunting dog/companion that will be living with me for the next 10-15 years spending the money up front for the pup is the first step into a good investment. Besides the price of your average drat is usually less than the your big time lab kennels. |
RE: which breeds best
:)cowboyfan, have you seen the "Hungarian Vizsla" they're the smallest of the "continental versatile breeds" and a beautiful solid rust color. They are similar in stature to the weimaraener and german shorthair pointer, except for color and size, they are the smallest.
A male should be no taller than 25.5 inches and weigh in around 60lbs. Do a search for them, there are numerous breeders and kennels throughout the naltion. A good place to start could be the Vizsla Club of America. They won't be inexpensive, if this is an issue, if not, then they are priced as any fine breed! Another site/kennel to look at is the "Rozanek Kennels" home of the Rebel Rouser Line of Vizsla. I happen to have a litter of four male pups that are going to be four weeks old next Wednesday, born on Aug. 4. The sire is a Rebel Rouser Vizsla that my best friend owns, and I own the dam, which comes from very good lines. I tried to post photos of the pups, but it didn't work. You could see photos of the sire and dam as well as the pups on Jesse's Hunting and Outdoors in the dog forums, my handle is BigDaddyB, look for posts regarding Vizslas of mine to see the photos! You have been given exceptional breeds to consider, labs, GDD, Weim's, etc. You need to decide what type of hunting will ocuppy the majority of your time afield, to determine the type of breed that will suit your desires! Any of these breeds can be trained to trail, not only blood scent, but what ever you care to train it for. Good luck, hope you choose the breed you want and have many years of good times together! |
RE: which breeds best
As I tell anybody that will listen the field bred English Setter is the finest pointing breed dog in North America. Look at good bloodlines such as the famed Smith Setter or Tekoa Mt sunrise. They are absolutely wonderful around children, every bit a good as any lab!
