free-roaming dog problem
We just recently got some new neighbors.
They are the redneck/white trash type. Now for y'all that are true rednecks, don't get all fired up!!! I've got a redneck streak in me a country mile wide... Like I said,"white trash type". Now for the problem. They have a mutt that roams freely around the neighborhood. We're living out here in the country where nobody ties their dogs up. They just teach 'em to stay at home. This dog has killed off both of my lil' brothers kittens. I don't care for cats at all, but it pisses me off that someone elses critter comes on our property and kills our critters. We also just got a cute little puppy to replace our Siberian Husky that died... The neighbors mutt has had our pup in the crosshairs a few time but our little pup fits in holes where the big mutt don't, so he got away. I had decided that the "Three S" solution would be the best option and I took appropriate steps and prepared all the hardware. Yesterday the neighbors kids were down playing by the crick. They had their mutt with them. They were having a little too much fun with him and now (softy that I am) I don't have the heart to cap him next time he shows up. So, is there ANY nonlethal method to prevent that dog from coming unto my property... other than giving our pup (shepherd/chow cross) some steroids and tellin' him to grow up fast?!?!? |

RE: free-roaming dog problem
We had that problem once, but in the suburbs. A dog started suddenly showing up and peeing on our deck; very friendly, nice dog, so we didn't want to hurt him. Next time he was up on the deck, my wife dumped 1/2 bottle of cheap Avon perfume on him. The next time she caught him on the deck, she dumped a whole bottle of one of my deer scents on him! Never saw the dog again. The dog probably didn't mind, but the owners, whoever they were, probably were not thrilled with the smell!

RE: free-roaming dog problem
check your local county ordinace, believe it or not most county and states have leash laws that apply to cats and dogs.i live in the country so to speak, and they passed a law a few years ago that only during hunting seasons can dogs be free roaming and even then it cant be excessive.I have heard of cases that a county employee has deemed a dog a house pet and not a hunting dog and took it away.but first try talking to the neighbor,,and be careful in your actions,be polite and friendly, and keep a cool head.also try talking to the game warden for your area, tell him of the kittin killings,he may help.ours tell us ,if its a free roaming dog and shows aggresion to people, pets,or wild animals, shoot it.or let them know and they will.

catch him and take it to the pound.the owner will get tired of paying to get it out and maybe keep it at home.

RE: free-roaming dog problem
SF...1st of all welcome aboard! I know this can be a tough situation, I only have one question...why do you seek advise here when you haven't even talked to the owners yet? There are a number of solutions possible, but the best is to come to an agreement with your new neighbors. If that doesn't materalize, then you can go to plan B, C or whatever. If it was me, I would be knocking on their door real quick....Good Luck with this......something tells me yagonnaneedit.

RE: free-roaming dog problem
A lot of good ideas coming up.
The problem I see with approaching the neighbor is this: 1. He's not exactly the most genial of fellows. 2. If I say something to him about his dog being a problem and then later S.S.S. the mutt.... he will have reason to be suspicious. I really like the buck lure idea. Also thought that maybe my skunk "cover scent" may work nicely!! |
RE: free-roaming dog problem
Try talking to the guy. if that doesn't work call your local humane society or animal shelter. if that doesn't work call the police. Only cap the dog as a last resort, it isn't his fault if his owner is an @$$hole. I'm not too fond of cats either but you shouldn't have to put up with this crap and if youy wanna have cats on your property then you or your brother or whatever should be able to. Good luck I hope everything works out for you. Let us know what happens.

RE: free-roaming dog problem
I'm with most of the posts, first try to talk to the owner and see if something can be worked out. If he's a dipsh!t and don't want to listen, go with the bbgun. I've had the same problem. I keep my bloodhounds in a kennel, but my neighbors have a beagle that just goes and does as he pleases. He has a bad habit of "teasing" my hounds at 4am and they go nuts and wake up this end of the county. After stingin' his butt with a low power bb gun, he's changed his mind about visiting.;)

RE: free-roaming dog problem
Thanks for all the good ideas!
First I removed all food sources, no dogfood left in the bowl, food scraps laying around, etc. That helped a bit, but didn't fix the problem totally. I used slightly more forceful disciplinary measures. He has not showed up since. I'm crossing my fingers but I doubt he will be back. His last visit was slightly traumatic for him. let's just say that while I was "talking" to the dog about the problem he was (LITERALLY) ****tin' himself! He was scattering turds all over the place. |
RE: free-roaming dog problem
As others have said, talking with the neighbor first is the best option. If that doesn't work, talk with your local humane officer/dog warden. Sometimes it takes an "official" person to let him know what kind of trouble he can get in if "his" pet keeps attacking other animals. After all in most states you are responsible for whatever you animal does.
As for non lethal methods of keeping the dog out of your yard. You can try a electric wire around the boarders of your property. You can buy an electric line/battery set up at Lowes for under $100. Keep the line about 2-3 feet off/above the ground. Don't worry...its not that strong, providing only 110 volts (i.e. it plugs into any 110volt socket). Not only will it keep other animals out, it will also keep yours in (you never know....your dog may be the problem when he gets older). Once the dogs have gotten "shocked" once or twice, they will generally steer well clear of the borders of the property. At that point you don't even half to keep it plugged up. Trust me, it is very effective. I would also avoid those underground fencing setups. They are a waste of money and fail most of the time. |
RE: free-roaming dog problem
Being a redneck from the country who has dealt with this, let me tell ya, the neighbor could care less. For me, I just released my rottweiler when other dogs came into my yard and let her settle it. If you don't like that idea, BB guns work well and the dog learns the boundry quick. It doesn't kill them, just stings them good enough to get their attention.:D

RE: free-roaming dog problem
When I was a boy in eastern Kentucky, they put the dog in a bulap bag, tied it to a tree limb, and had target practice. It was done somewhere on the neighbor's property. The bag was left hangin so he would find it. That might work, but it is awful mean and extreme.
You could get a havahart trap and trap a skunk or two. When the dog comes around, let the skunk loose (keep the trap covered and the skunk won't spray you). Then chase the dog away from your property. After doing this several times, the owner will probably take care of the dog himself. Another idea. Load the dog into your car/truck and take it to the nearest big city and let it loose. He'll find plenty of garbage cans until the dog warden finds him. Dillon |
RE: free-roaming dog problem
Had the same problem till I got my Paint Ball gun going. Won't hurt the dog but does sting. The rednecks may get the hint seeing that there dog is painted and makes an easy target. Use different colors so they know it is happening more than once.
Catch and release at it's finest. I now go looking (Hunting) for the dog in my yard and he isn't around as much!:D |
