just ordered "water dogs"
On a previous post I read about training an older dog.Well I have a 2 year old lab that is very well mannered that Im going to attempt to train as a duck dog.
I read where yall said to get the book water dog, well I just ordered the book and was wondering if there was anymore advice yall could give before I get started? I was wondering about giving my dog vitamins.Right now Im not giving him any but was wondering if this would benefit the training process any? |
RE: just ordered "water dogs"
The first thing you can start with is just basic obedience and retrieving. Get yourself a few training bumpers and a good sturdy lead(leather is a good choice, not those thin nylon leads).
Teach the dog sit first, then stay, then come. Eventually sit will mean stay but teach them seperately first. Use short training sessions, 10-15 minutes per day at first, less if the dog loses interest sooner. Take your training dummies and make it into a great game for the dog. Tease him with them, make him want them, throw a few feet and see if he'll retrieve him for ya. Gradually increase the length of the throws as the dog learns his job. These first few months in training you just want to focus on teaching the dog how to learn, and building his retrieving desire. Good Luck :) |
