This is my 8 yr old English Setter last year after a successful day of waterfowling. She does more waterfowling than upland but good at both.

Here's a pic of my bloodhounds. Their noses are too good to hunt with,(pick up cold trails) but I have used the older one to find lost game.

do you train the dogs to do that or do they do it by instinct?

Squirrelhunter, mainly you just have to keep them in the woods enough nights. If they have the instincts it will come out and they will almost train themselves. The handlers job is mainly to correct faults like running deer or foxes. However, if you have an older trained dog that is even tempered, it helps a lot to hunt a young dog with them until it has an idea of what it is supposed to do. Then you start hunting the young dog by itself until it is fully trained.
