Dog gets sick drinking standing water...now what?

Recently when I take my two year old male Springer in the woods, he always heads for the first water he sees. Unfortunately it's not always from a clear running stream or brook, but that big puddle that has formed from so much rain. He has had a case of the "runs" and I think that water has something to do with it. Does anyone have similar experiences and is there anything I can do or anything I can give him that may help. He seems to feel OK and the symptoms are gone within a day or two. Thanks to all in advance.

you're probably right, you might want to ask your vet about it if it ever persists. I ve never had that problem, but God knows they will drink just about anything.

I would have your vet check him. the water could be the problem, but i doubt it. A case of the runs that comes and goes could be caused by whipworms. A fecal exam will be able to rule that out or in.

I wouldn't worry about it if it only happens when you take him/her out for a run. My Springer always gets the runs when ever I take him hunting, once we are home he firms right up. May just be the energy level that these Springers have that causes them to do this.

Just a note... make sure to check gum color on your dog. A healthy pink is alright however does not rule out a parasite.. if the gums are very pale need to see the vet ASAP!!
