I have a black and chocolate. The chocolate is the oldest at 11. Unfortunately she has cancer. I'll either get another chocolate or a silver sometime after shes gone. I guess the silver ones are a color phase of a chocolate. I'll see if I can get the picture to work.

I prefer chocolate. The most important thing however is your training. I like the Water Dog books. They are very helpful. Above all else, BE CONSISTENT. Don't give a command you don't expect him to obey.

Honestly I think it is all training. All lot of folks say black is the best, chocolates are dumb, and yellow are in between, but my CLM has double the drive and brains as my BLM (of course my BLM is older and I had no idea what I was doing when I started him! LOL). 10 people will have 20 opinions on this. I know a lot of serious FT and HT folks turn their noese up at my chocolate. It's all personal choice!

I have a yellow and a chocolate. My yellow is very calm and relaxed, but she still does a great job in the field. My chocolate used to be very hyper but she settled down a little. She is still pretty hyper though. They both work very well in the field and even better as a team. I had a black and she was good until we got the other two. Then she got jealous and started leading them away farther and farther trying to get them to stay away. We had to give her away because she was causing problems. Good dog though.

Seth, We have one of each all 3, are great dogs. The most important part of selecting a puppy is to find a good breeder. Things that make a good breeder might be , they want to know about you and what you are going to do with the dog and your experience with dogs in the past, if they want you to give them first chance to take the dog back if its not working out for you. Good breeders might have the parents hips and eyes certified by a vet. These are just a few things you might come across when you are out looking. So many people today just breed dogs for $$ and they cut corners to increase profit. Out Of my dogs, my Chocolate Lab is the high maintenance one she has at times kept me in the poor house paying vet bills. Also she is the Alpha dog out of my 3, kinda The Queen but all in all she is a good dog. Best of Luck getting your puppy steve

Parents are the predictors of size and temperment. When it comes to labs I always felt the old adage was true "All labs are good, some are just better than others" A good breeder with good bloodlines aimed at what you want to do with the dog (field trials, agility, hunt) is more important than color.

I don't think color really matters. As for me though, i dont like the color yellow in general so i wouldn't own a yellow lab. I'd go with black or chocolate. If i can or decide to get a lab(s) i would get both colors.

the color is just a color. a black mother can have a yellow or chocalate pup. so it really depends on the breeding. i had a black, now a chocolate. my chocolate has a few blacks and yellows way back in the line. even akc just distinguishes the choc, yellow, black as a color, the breed is a labrador retreiver.

think of it as a new car, pick the manufacturer (breed), than the model(breeding), than the color. if you can only get the new ferrari in black, get it in black.[8D]
