People really suck!

We are geting a new foster dog Saturday. He is probably going to be put down if we can't gentle him down. He is a severe fear biter... thanks to his previous owner. This brit comes out of phenomenal bloodlines, and started out with all the desire in the world. Now, he is a trmbling mess.

During training, he was kicked in the testicles from behind so hard that they "popped". He was tied up/bound with a wire cable, and poked with a stick.

God have mercy on the jerk that did this...

Amen to that Doc, Mercy for a jerk like that? Scumbag needs his groin kicked by a horse. I sure hope you can turn that dog around who was unlucky to have a owner like that.

how do you get a dog, that has been beaten so severly, to turn around?
i am always being offered dogs, i have a kennel, i have never been given one that is this severely treated, but, i wouldn't mind some tips, for dogs that i have been given, that have been mistreated.
thanks, and best of luck with him.

RE: People really suck!

I appreciate all of your sentiments and good wishes. We thank you all. As for the owner, well, I would love to find him in an alley and teach him about what it means to be hurt... but my faith and our laws say leave him for others to judge.

We take in about 25 rescue dogs per year, but this is one of the most egregious cases I've encountered.

Sunset-
We do a lot of loving, and one-on-one training. A basic tenet is to return them to a comfortable level of training (such as basic obedience) to occupy their minds, while we try to restore their trust in humans. We also allow them to interact with our dogs and watch what proper human/canine interactions are like (full of love and respect!). In a couple of cases, we were even able to include them in our hunting stable until they went to loving permanent homes.

RE: People really suck!

I had a similar situation with an abused friend. This poor fellow had his back legs tied togher so long they both rotted is sack and caused sores down the insides of his legs. He bit everything that even remotely resembled a hand. (he was a lab, about 8 months when I got him). It took me two years of 'a little bit at a time' of just talking, biting(I let him bit my protected hand over and over until)while I talked to him and told him it was okay to just let her all out. Eventually he got so tired of biting me that he would just give up. I kept treats on hand and made sure he was given one everytime he did something positive. I also taught him the basic commands of sit, stay, come, and fetch. This seemed over time to get his mind off of his 'problem'. It took two years to get him there and he never responded to anybody but me. Never bit anybody but I always felt he could. He lived to be 14 years old. So don't start if you don't have the patience to see it through but it can be done. Good Luck!!

[:@]I would love to beat the owner too, blackline...BUT

I have had several dogs that were abused...It took WEEKS for them to learn that I was just gonna love and feed them. FEED is the secret in the end. They learn to trust you everytime you feed thm. It will take TIME, but they will soon learn that you are NOT going to hurt them. Like in the movie "Dances With Wolves" let him come to you for a treat!

Best of luck to you and God Bless you for your kindness for Man's Best Friend!!:)

Bandit is warming to my wife and I, slowly by surely. It's looking like a long raod, but when the situation is favorable, he can be the sweetest dog- just like a britt is supposed to be.

The vet will be fixing/ neutering his damaged testicles on tuesday, and we are hoping that his disposition will improve with their removal. We aren't certain, but do believe they are still causing him pain.

blackliner, thanks for taking care of him.

Not only should the previous owner be given the same treatment, but the breeder also. Some sell to everybody and don't follow up whats happening with the pups. And why is he not taking care of this dog? I would like to know who it is and make sure the information gets out to prospective buyers. Maybe that would stop him from selling dogs like used cars. blackliner, cudos to you my friend. It's nice to see people stepping up and helping these poor dogs. Please keep us informed on your progress with him.

maybe, before you get him totally turned around, you should take him to the previous owner and let the dog munch on his marbles for a few minutes! [:@] Tell him that the dog wanted revenge. not you! Grrr....

I say we tie this guy up and kick his testicles from behind until they pop and see how he likes it. I can't imagine someone doing that to their dog!!!! My Labs are part of my family and they are treated as such!!!! Spoiled Rotten retrieving machines!!!

Little gets me going like something like this. I can't watch Animal Planet's "Animal Cops", gets me worked up like someone just slapped my mom. Unbelievable what some people do to a pet. How is pooch coming along?

RE: People really suck!

Hey guys, thanks for all of your concern! Bandit has come through his neutering/surgery well and is recovering. I never cease to be amazed at animals' abilities to survive. This dog was regularly beaten and kicked, tormented through his kennel door, rarely fed or watered and his hunting trips amounted to prolonged torture sessions. All that, and he can still wag his tail and play fetch with the dokken.

The worst part is that he is just one of thousands out there. We take about 25-30 foster/rescue dogs into our kennels per year, and still recieve more requests than we can hope to honor.

God bless you, blackliner, for doing rescue. It's a real challenge.

Abuse comes in many forms. We just got a rescue in last week, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The breed standard for Cavaliers says they should weigh about 18# max. This poor dog weighed in at 40.1#; he is so fat, you can hardly tell he's a Cavalier. A clear case of the previous owners trying to kill him with kindnesss.

Kinda sounds to me like the guy that owned the dog before needs to get kicked in the testicles, bound up with rope, and poked with sticks and a couple more things that I probably shouldn't say on here. There is no reason for people to do that to a dog, especially a good hunting dog. These jerks should just get treated however they treat their dogs. There are some bad people in this world, and I just feel very sorry for the dogs that have to go live with them.

blackliner 03-28-2004 07:12 PM

RE: People really suck!

This really suck. really sucks. Let me preface this by saying that all of your good wishes and best thoughts have been greatly appreciated. Now the hard part- Bandit is going to have to be euthanized.

After all of the work my wife and I have done with him, and all of the time spent gentling him down, he still didn't have enough trust in people to not bite. While I was away last weekend, he bit two people badly. He thought he was protecting my wife, but house guests are not intruders.

I really felt like we were making good progress until now. I don't know, I just can't trust him to think like a normal dog. I have never known a brit to attack like this- ever. I place all of the blame on the mother f#*#er that bought him from the breeder and proceeded to torture him for the next three years. Believe me, your thoughts on what to do with him are far kinder than what is running through my head...

thanks...blackliner

Iam so sorry you had to put him down, I have a brit and i just can't bear to think what i would do in yout situation, Iam new to this fourm so i try to read as much as i can to catch up on whats going on in here, and this was the first post i have read it really sucks what some a#$hole will to to their dogs. I can't say I know how you feel cuse i dont all I can say is Iam sorry that it had to end in that way and i wish there were more people like you,,helping other pups that really need a second chance. the guy who had that pup should be tied up and kicked in his parts. I don't want to call them testicles, or balls, or nuts becuse a person like that has no balls..IMO

I agree, Animal cops drives me NUTS! As far as the authorities doing anything to animal abusers, here's the hard part: The laws aren't strong enough. Another problem we, as hunters, face is that it's hard to pass stronger animal cruelty laws due to the others trying to do the same thing... the antis. 90% of hunters love their dogs as much as they love people... sometimes more. But antis don't understand that and neither do most non-hunters. In addition to hunting dogs, I also have two little ankle-biters. My mini-dachshund (who could've been an AWESOME grouse dog) I rescued from a puppy mill. She was a breeding female, had a still-born litter (from over-breeding) and the owner was going to club her since, "She ain't making me no money." I took my little girl and called the Humane Society. The puppy mill was shut down, but for how long? Anyway, I took my dachsie in for a check-up and it turns out that this guy shot her several times with a BB gun!!!!! She had three BB's in her back legs! She's the sweetest damn dog I've ever met and it pisses me off to NO END that someone could've treated her like that!
Sorry all... I get REALLY worked up when I think about people hurting their dogs. There was a prayer that my wife (who is a Vet Tech) taught me: "God grant me the wisdom and patience to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am." Your dog is the most loyal companion you'll ever have and you should treat them as such. They work for you without complaint. They endure cut pads, long walks, "stickers" in their hair, cactus (in some areas) in their feet and legs, freezing and scorching tempuratures. And they still love you at the end of the day. And yet some d*ckheads still feel the need to beat them or hurt them for no reason. Give me one day with someone who beats a dog and I'll teach them the meaning of the word "Pain". Keep trying with your dog Boss... they have the intelligence of the average two year old ya know. It takes time, patience, and love. Good for you for showing the patience and love it's taking to teach this dog that not all owners are *ssholes!

i don't know how someone could do that to any animal, but especially a dog! not much gets me fired up like this. i have a german shorthaired pointer, and i have hit her maye ten times in her life, and that was just on the snout for doing things she knows she shouldn't do... and i feel bad every time i do it. i am a christian and believe that God should do the judging, but i seriously doubt that i could have the faith that you have enough to not want to hurt this person! i have fostered dogs in the past, but none like this. you deserve a medal and bless you for doing this!

Isn't it just sickening what some "people" will do to a helpless animal? There are a lot of suffering animals out there, but they'll find peace soon, I hope. blackliner,, I hope your dog starts feeling better, keep us posted on how it's all going.

I don't think I can add anything to what others have said, just keep up the good work and patience and he'll come around.
