i have a choclate lab that is finally starting to listen and he comes everytime and sits but only next to me. if i say sit he will come and sit next to me instead of sitting out in front of me. is there anyway i can get him to sit out in front of me. any one got any training tips.

If you want pup to sit in front of you then move him in front of you with his lead, command sit, using the lead by pulling straight up on it to encourage pup to sit. When he does it right praise him. If it's not right then correct him by moving him to the right place, move him into sit, the praise. If you point to the spot where you want pup to go, then put him there with the lead, then make him sit, and praise him, he should soon start to get the message. Good Luck!

yea i have a 8 almost 9 week old yellow lab. and he is catching on to his name and will sit when i am near and he will come when i am close to him, he wont sit 50 feet away but if i make 1 step to him he knows i am serious. But he is young yet and he is doing good. I have him on a 30 foot lead. and duck wing. he is at heel ( he doesnt do it on command) he sits i throw it he stays put till i say Fetch and he gets it and some times bring it back but most of the time will just lay down and chew on it. I need HElppppp......

what is mine by in front of me is like when he is out in front of me like 25 yards and i say sit he runs back to me and then sits instead of just sitting right were he is. does anyone know how to fix this problem.

This is a pain but it works, mark the spot where the dog is when you give the command. If it comes to you, pick it up bobily , do not hurt it, and carry it back to the spot where you wanted it to sit. Make it sit and then you walk back to where you came from. They hate this and in time will sit anyplace on command.

Pheasantlab.......Did you use the a whistle while you were doing basic obeidence on the sit command? One toot of the whistle will replace the verbal sit command down the road.

While walking with the dog at heal....command sit...whistle...sit.....after a few sessions the dog will pick it up. Eventually you will not have to use the verbal sit. As the dog progresses....start increasing your distances...before you know it he will be sitting on the whistle at 50 yards.

Willbjew..... Slow down! I would say the opposite of what you are saying. Keep doing what you are doing. At 8-9 weeks old you are ahead of schedule. Remember that you are dealing with a pup that is stilll trying to get accustomed to his environmnent. Keep on drilling the basic obedience. That is the foundation to what all of your future training will be based on. What you wand to do is put him on a 30ft check cord when he retrieves the objects...and decides he is going to stray....give him the here command with a slight tug on the cord....eventually he will realize that hey....here means get back to my owner PRONTO! reps...reps...reps....

What training book are you using as your training guide? I've never seen any training book that would even suggest that you try to train this to a 9 week old baby.

I agree w/ Darke. If pup is sitting on command @ 9wks then he is doing well. I think it is possible to burn a young dog out by pushing him too hard too early. Slow down and enjot pup as a puppy...they don't stay that way long!
