Best dog training collar?
I have a 130 pound mastiff and need a recommendation for a good dog training collar. I bought one at the local pet store but it didn't work since he couldn't feel the impulse through his thick skin/fur. The Sportdog low/high output series looks promising, but I am hoping for a recommendation before buying one.
Thanks in advance! |
Tri-Tronics are darn good. I use a Pro 100. The Sport G3 is also good
|
Tri-tronics is the best with Dogtra, Dt systems not far behind. Sportsdog is a good, economical collar. Innotek is known for a poor product but may have improved since Sportsdog bought them out.
I would question if you really need a collar. Hunter use them on their dogs because they have to curb/control natural instincts which are encouraged traits bred over centuries. Sometimes it's needed for safety reasons; guns, trucks, etc.. For house pets, general treat training or positive reinforcement is fine. |
TT (Tri-Tronics)
If the contacts are too short you can push the button till the cows come home they will not get corrected. Long contacts! |
I'd start with this then maybe a e-collar will not be needed.

If you are gonna buy one, I would recommend a Tri-Tronics. I've used them for years coon hunting and they are the best IMO.

By far, the premier ecollar is the TriTronics Pro 500 EXP
. |
TT for sure! The Innotek I had was garbage and went in the trash in less than a year. He may need an ecollar with long points for a dog as big as a Mastiff and they need to be fairly tight to have good point contact. The kids had a Mastiff (Ben!) that was a gentle giant and wouldn't harm a flea, but they are so big I don't know whether that choke collar would do much other than get you dragged to death, LOL!

For a non-sporting dog, the pinch collar above is the way to go. Just use it properly, keep dog on lead until only minor corrections are needed.

Bunnie , any update? or did ya just shoot the dog and keep things simple?
