New Hunting Dog

Last week my Brittany died. I am now looking for another hunting companion. My question is what are the pros and cons of the Vizsla vs. the Brittany. I am also looking at relatively new breed the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The primary aim is companionship, family and upland game esp. pheasant and quail. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Jalan, I have been a Brittany man for many years, From what I have seen of the Visula, my buddy had one and it just was not birdy and couldn' t smell bacon cooking. I know of one other and for some reason it does not Point, but has show championships from here to Sunday. I' d be real careful buying a Viz.. Brittany' s are usually good and easily checked for hunting ability. As you know they are a good family dog and all that stuff. If you had a loyal relationship with your past Brittany, why change, just for the fun of it? The other dog you are considering I know nothing about. Bob

JAlan - So sorry for your loss.

As a replacement, you might consider an English Setter puppy like mine, below (she is not for sale).

Sometimes a started dog is a nice thing...you get what you want and someone else has done all the work. Might cost you a bit more, but worth it in the long run.

I had a buddy that had a couple of Vizlas and both were good dogs.Good noses, solid on point and great with the family.I have a French Britt and he is all of the above also.I do prefer the hunting style of the Britt a little more.Just a little more animated and fun to watch.Sorry to here about the loss of your huntin' buddy.

I have hunted over both and have seen real good hunting vizla' s and real good hunting Brit' s, also seen real bad of both breeds as well.

They both have made great family members to.

Just a thought, but the vizla is a very short haired dog, not sure how bad your winters are or how late the seasons run, but the guy I know who hunts vizla' s has to be real careful on some late season hunts when it gets REAL cold here in the Northeast. It isn' t common but even 1 missed day due to cold would suck in my opinion. I don' t think Brit' s have the same problem.
