WHy do city folk buy big working/sporting dogs?
My bro-in law is a biologist and hunter. He despises city people that dont hunt who get labs. He loves his dogs and knows they need to hunt occasionally to be happy. So why do so many city people get large working and sporting dogs when they will NEVER use them for what they were bred for over generations.

It is because they do great in the city. That's why.
I know lots of people who have hunting dogs in the city and suburbs. They will never hunt them and that's great. As long as they exercise the dog sufficiently, it doesn't seem like there should be a problem. I'm not saying you should take a Catahoula and leave it in your studio ten hours a day. If you have a more relaxed dog like a lab and it does get enough exercise, then why not? City folks don't demand that you give up plumbing or electricity because the city is where it originated. Share the wealth my friend. Can't city folk have dogs?
You are funny.

What about the Labs or Golden Retrievers used to help the non-seeing community?
Your broter in law is very narrow minded which seems tohave transferred to you.

Because it's a free country. Saying that a dog has to hunt to be happy is plain dumb. I know several people, self included, that having "hunting" breeds that never hunt. My dogs haven't told me personally, but they seem happy. I know several people that have hunting dogs that are only used for hunting. Meaning that when they are not hunting they are in a little pen all day, everyday surrounded by their feces and urine.

glad to see others disagree,
dont buy the premise of the argument at all,
being bred for 1 purpose isnt always a good thing for the animal,
by your argument, we shouldnt own pitbulls unless we intend on fighting them,
or shouldnt own greyhounds unless your going to race them,
or shouldnt own huskies unless you plan on pulling a dog sled,
or shouldnt own st bernards unless you plan on rescueing people.
like other dogs labs make great pets and people like/want them for different reasons,

2. Nowdays, very few dogs are used for what they were originally bred for. Dogs want a job, but they don't care what the job is.
