RE: Beginner Pheasant Dog?

You definately need to decide if you want a pointer or a flusher. You also need to decide what type of hunting you want to do. Right now you might say pheasant but as you get older and might include waterfowl. The size of the dog also should be concidered when looking for a dog. I have a GSP and a Lab while both dogs are great they excel at different birds. The GSP is fantastic at upland while still good at waterfowl ( a little to exciteable in a blind at times) the Lab is great as a waterfowl and does fine on upland. Both are very versitale dogs. When people say one breed is better then another it all depends what you want to hunt. Retreiver don' t compare to pointer in upland, top field test breeds are English pointer English setter and then German shorthair pointer. But those dogs don' t compare the retreiver in there tests top retreiver are LAB Chessies. As far as hunting mostly Pheasent a Springer or a Brittney are hard to beat. Both will hunt waterfowl and are very natural hunters and are easy to train. They are a little smaller dog which your parents would probalbly appreciate.
