my golden has a heart problem
 

My 6 year old male Golden Retriever was coughing bad the other day so off to the vet we go . Come to find out he has a heart arthymia (sp?) The coughing was due to fluid build up in his lungs so he was put on medicine for that but now we need to go about 3 hours away to a specialist to see if anything can be done for his heart . Has anyone else had a problem like this ? How long can we expect him to live now ?

Have you tried looking for a golden retriever forum? I know there are a few lab ones out there that I have went to when I had issues. Might be a good place to start. Hope your Pooch makes it through it all..

The forum idea would probably be good. Or just search for a well credited breeder online and just call him. It might save you alot of time and money.

Have him tested for heart worm. systems are the same and can be treated.

I had the same thing happen to my Lab -- he had just turned 11 when diagnosed. He lived to 14 years, two months until he had a stroke. All we did was give him some medications that the vet prescribed.

He was still a great companion and friend -- he just did not have the ability to do too much physically before getting tired.

I agree with others, educate yourself via research, forums, and the internet, and get him the best care and medicines that you are capable of affording. Sorry to hear about your situation.

thanks for all the advise Orion goes to see a speacialist tomorrow . Now I just hope it won't be anything too serious

thanks Ava the specialist put him on thyriod med and digoxin for his heart he was hopeful that this will work
