How do I keep my beagle from digging up my yard
I have a beagle pup, indoors. She is a good hunter and house dog. However, I have a fenced in back yard and just recently she has begun to dig up holes in a few areas. She is only out for maybe 5 minutes at a time, lately she is focused on the one spot. Any ideas on what to do so she stops.

Yes, your dog' s own place (i.e. Fenced Kennel Run).

Give her more exercise. Apply pet repellent to areas that she has been digging.

If your dog is collar conditioned, usually a " no, nick, no" will disuade them from digging.

I' ve always had labs, but have found that when they dig it' s because there' s something under the ground they' re looking to find, i.e. a wooden and decaying hammer handle, an occasional tulip bulb (oops), a screwdriver and various other things. I once got a shovel and finished digging a hole that one of my labs started and when I got down about 12" I found what appeared to be a coyote carcass. I transplanted that off my property, far away.
Maybe your dog keeps digging in the same spot because there' s something decaying under there. Maybe a dead body...cool. Just joking with you, but it is possible. Beagles too, have good noses. Good luck with your dog. critch |

I have found that if you scoop up some of the dog' s droppings and place it in the hole, the dog will stop digging " there" . This gets messy if the dog moves on to another hole though. Good luck, this has worked with both of my Labs.

Thanks for all the great tips! I actually dug up the spot and found a bunch of pea gravel pellets under the soil in that spot, I think they may have been what she was digging for. I put some fresh sod over the filled-in hole after I took out the pea gravel and she has quit digging there so far.
