Coon Hound for Phesant?

Early July a black and tan coon hound pup showed up on my front doorstep. He was only about two months old, skinny, and had a hurt paw. There had been a lot of instances of people just leaving their pets behind when their homes were foreclosed and I believe that's what happened here.

He has an unbelievable nose and was wondering if anyone has expierience in pheasant hunting with one. I would like to do some type of hunting with him, although I don't bear hunt. My only concern with pheasant hunting would be trying to keep his baying and howling under control.

Here is a picture of my Chocolate cuddling with him.

RE: Coon Hound for Pheasant?

I have a Plott hound and live in eastern PA. Hunting him safely is very limited and he must be kept close. My Plott hound hunts pheasants and turns many hunters heads. He rarely lets me down getting my limit. When he was a pup on his first morning he had no clue what the other pointers were looking for. After cleaning the birds and allowing him to have a mouth full of feathers,I hunted by myself with him that afternoon. He was a different dog and found a bird right away. He put up many birds that day and even caught one himself. Many times he out performs the pointers he hunts with. He does not point, but you know when he is on a bird.

He Also hunts rabbit, squirrels and anything that runs if you allow him. He has found several dead bearson a blood trail. We can not use dogs on bear in PA, he is limited on what I can hunt in PA.

He is also a great house dog.

That is not a black and tan coon hound.
Looks more like a hound/shepard mix.

my dad just got a blue tick coon hound. He doesn't hunt coons but is hoping she'll be able to hunt pheasants...

The plott is a different type of hound than the bluetick or the black and tan hound. The plott was bred for a hotter scent than the others. You notice that they walk different than the colder scent hounds. A hog or bear dogneeds to move quicker. So in your case you may be right. But the traditional coon hound, no.
