Hips and Thyroid?
 

As I recently lost mySetter,am looking for another pup.I'vebeen trying to educate myself on dog health problems, a couple of which seem quite common to most dogs, namely hips and thyroids. Are these issues caused by selective inbreeding or is it a naturally ocurring phenomenon?I understand that defects can be passed on genetically, but would think that would play into selective breeding, rather than against it. My last dog had kidney issues, discovered too late that his sire also passed at the same age as mine from the same malady. Leaning on you guys to give me a little more info, make the decision making a little more scientific.

There are over 300 genetic diseases in the "dog family".
Different breeds have different types of genetic problems.
