redbones?
 

I'm thinking about getting a redbone. not really for a full time working dog, but more or less a yard dog that may be able to slowtrail a deer for me every once in a while. i guess my question is how trainable are these dogs. I just want to make sure I'm not geting a dog that will be too gamey to keep in the yard, or a dog too stubborn to learn anything. your thought and opinions are appreciated.

I'm not an expert on redbones but everybody that I know with other hounds (from plotts all the way to beagles)have trouble with them staying home when they aren't hunting. Their noses get them into trouble. I have heard of people making hounds pets but just from my experience you might have some trouble.

every dog is trainable. just a matter of how much discipline you'll have to administer. read a lot about dog training because there arre a lot of misconceptions & myths.

My biggest concern might be a noise problem, if you live in a suburban type area a hound might be kind of loud, if you leave them outside in a kennel at night or during the day when you are gone. They are loud by breeding and that might get you into trouble. They get something in their nose and start in talking, look out.

First of all not all redbones are open or balw mouthed i have a full blood redbone and she does not make a peep until she is looking at the pig so you would just have to work with your dog but understand they love to hunt mine stays in a kennel she got out once and a guy fifteen miles a way called me and said i have your dog when i picked her up he said he herd her in the creek barking(baying) a pig after he shot the pig she just stood there and waited for him and he called me she had only been out for two hours or so. But i can say she is on of my best dogs

Who really cares, I was just trying to help the guy avoid a problem. Every one I have seen hunting lions opens up on scent not sight. I was in no way tearing down thebreed. Matter of fact, I like loud dogs, I don't want one that isn't loud on scent.

If you punctuate your posts, more people might be able understand whatever you are trying to say.

I can't speak on redbones, but I liveneara family that owns a beagle.His is just a yard dog butif he stays out all night i know it because he trees coons all night long behind my house. Don't get me wrong, I love my hounds (3 walker, 2 blueticks) but i can't stand to be in bed at 4am and hearthe beagletreeing for an hour (he is a hard treeing dog).

Some houndsjust live to hunt, and be aware of that before you get one.

Some use redbones for bear and coon hunting up here and most i have ever seen bayed alot. I think up here they do that for a reason. They like to know where thier dogs are when they are treeing an animal..
