Game retrieval problems
 

I have a yellow lab of 6 yrs. Although she has an excellent nose, I've always had problems with her delivering a bird to hand. She typically stops short of me by about 10 yds and drops the bird while mouthing it. With rubber dummies, she runs to me at full speed, circles behind me before I can get it. Any suggestions, or is it too late? Thanks

At six years old my guess is its too late..
You can try using a shock collar, but it will do more harm than good at this stage of her life..
She'll be scared to even jump in the cab with you..
Enjoy the years you have left with her, she probably loves doing what she does with you, and if and when you get a new pup use a shock collar from the beginng and it won't be long before it will not be needed at all....

It's never too late. Seek out a pro and ask for their help. The dog just needs to know what you want.

Know everybody is easy to jump to a shock collar, but remember that is why they are so talked down because of that. A shock collar is a training tool to reinforce training not a training instrument. No do not use a shock collar. If it is bothering you that much then she needs to be put through a force retrieve or force fetch session. You can do it yourself but recomend you find a Pro to do it for you. If you live in Missouri let me know I can fix that problem for you. And do not use the shock collar to force her to bring you the bird she might just tell you in her own way to get the rest of the birds yourself.

This kind of problem is why most of us suggest Force Fetch as part of a training program.
I'm not sure I would want to FF a 6 year old dog though --- Most of us FF at 6 to 8 months of age.

Just to add to what Doc and BKL have already said....

Properly teaching "hold" would prevent/cure this, Hold is not fetch.... Hold is the dog holding the object until you command drop. I always go with "Drop", Hold, then FF.

Do yourself a favor and talk to a pro in your area, see if they can help get you on track.
