I would get a good training book. Delmar Smith is a good one. If anything, it will give an idea of what's involved and understanding the nomenclature. Then join a club that's bird hunting affiliated or field trial affiliated. Meet people because there's wealth of knowledge.

For general tips on puppy care, any puppy book will do.

p.s. although some people like 'Gun Dog' by Wolters, just be aware the method, as I understand it, is rather harsh.

Stumper where are you located. If you are going to train pup yourself then get as many reading material and videos as you can, but they will never tell you everything you need to know on how to train an actual bird dog just the basics. The best thing to do is get a hold of a trainer and ask them for help, or do hourly rates if possible with them. Although it is better to just let them train the dog. But if you want to do the work yourself hope you fun and the patience for it. The video Gun Dogs by richard wolters is not bad but there are better ones out there.

I would follow what others are suggesting as well as getting a hold of a pointing dog gun club. Most of them there will be more than happy to help you out..
