Best of Both Worlds

I am torn on which dog to get. This is going to be my first dog as im just about to graduate college. Im looking for a waterfowl/upland dog. My hunting partners have used chocolate labs for both purposes and they think i should get one too, but my question is "is there another dog other than a lab i could get for both purposes, waterfowl and upland?" Thanks!

If you are going to hunt with your friends then I would suggest a flusher. Unless you or your friends train their labs not to flush birds if the pointer is pointing, the pointer is going to pick up bad habits. For flushers, you are abit limited (discounting the labs), spaniels (springers), goldies, and a few exotic breeds.

Okay ou asked!

Please check out NAVHDA.org - They have a lsit of many fine breeds if you are looking for a pointing dog that with traingincan do it all!

NAVHDA'saim through their grass root chapters to which I am sure you have one in your area - is to help train you train your own versatile pointing dog on both land and water before and after the shot and to conserve game!

The breeds are many and all are listed on the above web-site. I owned labs and now run GWPs - Breed is matter of choice but let me tell you - I have a great pointing dog for upland - and a very realibale retriever asI also hunt waterfowl/geese and in icey conditions!

Oh I am not saying it is the best breed but is the breedI have chosen - I will not start any dog wars here! Just advising you to do your research - look at many breeds and what they can do and then pick one that will fit your needs and be aprt of your family!

Attend AKC Hunt tests for obht pointers and retrievers - and any NAVHDA tests in your area - ask questions.

Whats the difference between black, yellow and chocolate labs? i've herd yellow labs are stupid, chocolate are stubborn and haven't really heard anything about black labs.. are these stereotypes true about the different colored labs?

Dont believe everything you hear. Thats not even a sterotype, thats just plain BS.

A lab is a lab. They come in different colors by nature, A yellow lab doesnt know hes yellow, neither does a black...

I would suggest a Boykin spaniel if you dont want a lab, they are about the second best all-around dog I can think of besides a lab.

Wait, do your friends still have labs and are you planning to hunt along side them? If yes, then you will have to becareful when their labs hijack your dogs point, if you get a pointer. If you have no plans of hunting besides flushers then you have more options in versatiles like what everyone is suggesting.
