Help....identify a breed
 

Years ago I read an article about a versitile breed that must track a deer a couple miles and do some bird related work to be certified in some way. I seem to remember the breed began with Drat....? Anybody have any ideas? Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Nevada Jim...you nailed it. It's only been about 20 years since I read the article--I'm pleased this old mind could get as close at Drat....?!

My family had one of these dogs when I was a teenager. They LOVE to hunt and roam. Our female was a great pheasant hunting dog, with a one qualification: it was very hard to train her to stay close to you. She would charge into a field, find a pheasant and hold it until you walked up to her, then flush it out on command. Quite an amazing thing, she could hold almost any pheasant indefinitely if needed. My dad didn't like hunting with her but I did, since I just let her search each field for all the birds. :) Less walking for me. She would retrietive decently too, as I remember.

A very energetic dog, that was always friendly and playful with us kids. She didn't like cats or other small dogs, though.

Oh, some other things I just remembered about our drahthaar. She would stot like a mule deer when running through the alfalfa fields. Kind of weird to see in a dog, and I don't know if that is normal for the breed. But like I said, she found the birds. When she was done with a field, I was confident that she hadn't missed any pheasants.

She was also a strong swimmer, but we didn't take her duck/goose hunting, since our chocolate lab was unbeatable in retreiving ability. Not that our drahthaar was bad, but our lab was just a real pleasure. I would think that a drahthaar would also make a great grouse hunting dog too.

My male also bays like a hound, when he's on hot scent of fur that may have wild flushed up in front of him (yotes,feral cats,rabbits) ,as well as pointing whitetails,upland birds,furred smallgame.They make excellent water dogs if trained properly for it.In short if it lives in the bush it's huntable in his eyes.
