I have a basset, though I don't hunt him for reasons that I dont need to get into here. I will say this, my hound is like yours, his nose is always to the ground. Casey is a great dog, but bullheaded, and if he smells something that interests him, he becomes tunnel vision (nose) to it, and forget anything else, like me or my wife calling to him. I am sure, with proper training, they are fantastic, just make sure thatit istrained, or you have some way to keep sight or sound of them.

good luck.

exactly gunner is bullheaded, and for some reason he is very protective, like if my other dog comes around me he gets after him pretty hard

They can be very good rabbit dogs. Though most Bassets today are bred for show or pets. There are some bloodlines that are still being bred for hunting/gundogs. This 17 week old pup is out of such breeding. He's my newest rabbit hound. Barney is the latest of decades of Bassets bred for hunting.
He is already starting to trail wild cottontails up to 100' or so.

sure they can hunt rabbits.
my lab hunts them too but cant go into briars, your basset can and thats good for rabbits and pheasants also..

i killed more pheasants years ago on state land here in pa. with a beagle, not a lab or gsp, setter.

why?because after pheasants are pressured that are left, they will head to briars, not fields and thats where your basset will shine.....
