Got Oats in at the Pond
 

Not purely a "dog related" post, but close enough.

The land directly surrounding our waterfowl pond had always been in pasture grass in the past. This year, the landowner and I struck a deal so that he would put it into oats instead. This way we will be able to shoot geese as they come into the pond, but now we should have some field shooting too.

Pic #1 is our pond from Google Earth. Our blinds are at each end of the white line. The Oats will be in the land inside the visible fence lines.

Pic #2 shows the view of the oat field from where my blind will be.

Pic #3 shows an edge of the pond (on the left) and part of the new Oat field.

Just so that nobody thinks we will be "baiting", the Oats will be harvested by the landowner in the normal fashion at the appropriate time, and only normal "spillage" seed will be left in the field. Just like wheat or barley or corn fields.

Baitingseems to havedifferent meenings to different states. In NC for example only crops can be left alone or harvested with normal AG practices. No manipulation of crops.
In Soth Carolina you can leave the crop in the field or manipulate crops by mowing, discing, burning, even combine and shoot out on the ground.
Basically anything you want to do just as long as the crop does not leave the field and come back.
for the ducks i haveimpoundments that are planted in corn and then flooded in the late fall when mature. works great, also after the rice is picked in October we re-flood those areas as well
