If you are going to be around for the whelping and it will be in a comfortable place for your dog.....no need to go crazy on a whelping box. We use a plastic baby swiming pool from Walmart......out lay of about 9 bucks! The corners are rounded to minimalize mom laying on one of the pups and suffocating them. IT is easy to keep clean for whelping and through the nursing stages. Most of all, it's light and small and easy to store until needed again!

If you do plan to build one and you don't think you will be around for the whelping, make sure you have a "pig rail" incorporated in to your plans. Have your female get acclimated to her new surroundings a week or so prior too. A linolium floor is a great idea as well, easy clean up during and after whelping. The entrance needs to be at least 12 inches high so pups cannot escape and egress and digress will be easy for Mom. You dont want her to have to leap in the box making the chance of hurting a pup higher.

Hope this helps you out a bit..... IF I can help any further let me know.

Blue - I suggest you get some plywood for the floor and 1x10s for the walls. Make the box 3' - 4 ' square. on the sides, screw a 1x6 about 4" up from the floor on edge.Moms tend to roll on their sides during feeding and this protects the pups from being suffocated. And they like to snuggle under these boards. You should be able to get some sketches on line somewhere. If I find any, I will post them for you.

Sorry to hear you missed. Sometimes I think these girls do that to get more to eat :D

Interesting story about false a pregnancy. One of our girls went through a false pregnancy last year. While she was doing that, another girl had a litter of pups. Just about the time she would be due her milk came in and that darn girl started nursing the 4 week old pups!

A 5' "kiddie pool" is the best whelping box that there is. Nice sloping sides so the little ones don't get squished when mom lays down.
