Do any of you give your dog food supplements while hunting. My dog is extremely drained after a day of chasing roosters, and I was wondering if I should try some of these nutrition bars for her. Let me know your thoughts.

What kind of dog do you have?
What brand and variety of food do you feed?
When do you feed?

I have a female pointing black lab, she is 2 1/2. I feed her Iams large breed. I try to get her to eat something in the morning before a hunt(1-2 hours before we start), but she isn't always receptive. She eats the night before for sure.

My older GSP would never eat before hunt or during a hunt for that matter. It never seemed to effect him one bit...that's just how he was. However, the younger GSP would always tire out quickly in his earlier years, even though he was conditioned and would eat before a hunt. I used to have to give him sugar cubes and/or a power bar for dogs. It usually seemed to do the trick.

Iams Large Breed is pretty low in protein and fat for a hard working dog. I'd suggest you switch to a Performance (Eukanuba Performance, Eagle Pack Power etc)food with 30% Protein and 20% Fat.

It takes a dog 12 to 16 hours to fully digest a meal, so the feeding the night before a hunt is the important one. Give the dog 2/3 of it's food at night and 1/3 in the morning.

If your dog is otherwise healthy, and you are feeding a Performance food, you shouldn't need to supplement.

Good Advice Doc!

I also take Glucosamine every morning. You don't have to be a canine!
