Question for Alabama HUnters
I've been researching Alabama for possible hunting next year. I'm looking at Covington WMA . I don't understand what days are Quality Deer and What days are any deer. They have a chart with all 70 days on it. Some of the days have Quality Deer wrote on them, Does that mean the other days that are blank would be buck or doe??
Thanks for your help, Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
I havn't heard of those rules, but will try to find out. If you are wanting to hit the rut, figure the last couple of weeks of January.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
I live in Alabama and have never heard of quality days but I don't hunt WMA's, only private land. I will , or you can log on to the Alabama Dept. of Conservation website and try to find out.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
I just went to the website and the only thing I see different from other areas of the state is that at Covington bucks must have 3 points on one side to be legal.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Rebel,
I've looked at the stats . That state has a very high yield. License isn't bad either. Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Again, not sure about the WMA, but in south Bama you can take a doe and a buck or two does each day on private lands.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Thanks Timber,
I also noticed how cgeap that realestate is there. Very tempting to move. Homes and land that would sell easily for 225,000 sells there for 100,000 Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Southern Friends,
I just got the word from the Alabama wildlife authorities. Being in Florida and with the price of fuel I either wanted to hunt in Covington or Escambia county WMA . The 'man' said as Timber said, Covington must have at least 3 points on one side. Escambia must have antler above the hair line. SOLD !!! I'll be going to Escambia. I've only got one more steak left. I just ate 2. They were Green Swamp and very good. Thanks for the replys, Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
2 deer per day, 1 buck and 1 doe or 2 does from Oct 15 thru Jan 31, except in certain locations. Good hunting, good fishing, good people, good place to live, but the politians are the pits. Oh yeah, I forgot, we also have the Alabama Crimson Tide. Why woundn't anyone want to move here?
|
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
There is only one reason why I don't. Being a teacher I would lose my retirement. However; there are 4 towns that border Florida. I am presently looking at real estate in those locations. I trained once while in the service in Alabama. It is one of the most gorgeous states I've ever been in. I'm buying my son a license too this year so he will hunt with me.
Once I land a job in a northern school system in Florida,I'm out of here. Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Yes ,After rereading there are 5 WMA areas with Quality bucks only. I believe they are still handing out SOME permits at the gate for does.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
i live 30 miles from covington wma and 20 miles from blue springs wma.all management areas have certain days that you can hunt with a rifle, of those days it is possible to draw a doe permit on designated hunts. all females and hunters under 16 will be given a doe permit. covington does have a 3 point on one side rule. the land located in the covington wma is not owned by the state, and there is a rumor that the land owner may pull the lease if the state does not start manageing the land better.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
I would think that there would be several openings for teachers in NW Fl. It seems the schools are always being added to. Just last week the Walton County school board announced they are going to build a new elementary school in Mossy Head, just west of DeFuniak Springs on highway 90. We have a new development close by where if you buy a 10+ acre parcel you have usage of the entire tract (about 6,000 acres, but with some restrictions) This is the second fastest growing county in the state and land is really going up in price. I know the school board members well, what grades do you teach?

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Timber,
Thanks,I am certified to teach All ESE....,and Elementary K-6......I am also ESOL certified. I am presently teaching 3rd grade. My wife also teaches 3rd grade as well at the same school. Thanks for the imformation, Chuck |

Thanks, Does it cost anything to camp on Covington? What are the hours of the check station? Were you very successful there? I read the stats from an Alabama web-site. They harvest 8 times more deer than my local WMA.And we are open 7 days a week for 2 1/2 months. CHuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
i am not sure if they have camping at covington wma. if it is allowed it will only be about $8 a night. if camping is not allowed there is camping at the state park at florala al at that state park. however at the blue springs wma there is primitive and electric hookups available. this campground is on a lake with showers. this campground is about a twenty minute drive from covington wma. the land at covington wma is only leased by the state therefore has not been improved by adding campsite and etc.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
the check in times are normally at 5am.i do very little hunting at covington however there are some good quality and quanity of deer taken with a bow and gun. I do most of my hunting and blue springs wma. it is only about 20 minutes from my house. you can download a map of all of the wmas from their web page

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
How is Blue Springs. Can you hunt buck or doe?
What are the odds of scoring a deer? Thanks, Chuck |
RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
on either sex days you have about one chance in four in drawing a permit. on the wma i cannot imagine any one not taking a deer with a permit. at the present time nwtf is also having a habitat restoration project going on ,which should also help the deer hunting on the wma. normally covington and blue springs are in the top ten wmas every year with the number of deer taken. one thing for you to take in consideration is that the hunts are normally on different weekends, you can hunt on a rifle hunt one weekend at covington and then come back the next weekend and hunt at bluesprings. the deer hunts are on friday and saturday, however you can bowhunt on any other day, as well as hunt for small game. also i see that you enjoy fishing, blue springs wma has open pond, which is stocked with bass catfish and bluegill, with the campground located at this small lake.oh also their is a huge rustic pavilion at the picnic area that is ideal for reunions or weddings. this is where my wife and i were joined in holy matrimony almost eleven years ago.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
Thanks so much for all of the imformation. When you said "i cannot imagine any one not taking a deer with a permit" did youmean bothWMA areas? If that is the case, you might hav ejust talked me into getting a license. Are you allowed to scout on Thursdays, the day before the hunting day? I don't think they allow camping at Covington.

RE: Question for Alabama HUnters
all wmas are open 365 days a year. at the present time some of the gates are closed to promote turkey nesting, however they are open to nonmotorized vehichles and hiking. many of the wmas have many miles of hiking trailes and the wmas allow camping in remote areas during the off season. during the season archery is allowed from october 15 to jan 30 with a permit map, wma lic. and hunting lic. therefore scouting is allowed on any day before a hunt, just dont be caught with a rifle in pocession before the hunt. later on they will print the wma maps for covington and all the regulations as well as the days of the hunts and the days they will give out doe permits on the quota system at the check in station. i will be glad to send you one of these maps for covington and blue springs. you are required to have one of these map permits in your pocession at all times during all hunts. I believe all females and hunters under sixteen will receive an either sex permit. if you will be having someone with you that will of course increase the odds of someone in your party having a permit.if you come early for your gun hunt at blue springs you can scout, fish, camp, bow hunt, hunt for small game, and hike. the only thing not allowed on the wmas or the national forest at any time is the use of a four wheeler that cannot be put on the highway.:eek:
