Default What is this?

I was hunting Friday and saw what I thought was a hawk. When it got closer I got a good look.........the body and shape of a hawk, color of feathers and breast plate of a hawk...........but it had a red/orangish head. Dagdist thing I have ever seen? What is this BEAUTIFUL bird. Don't tell me a redheaded wood pecker. That would be a record book holder in size I'm here to tell ya. Ain't a wood pecker I've ever seen had those colors or SIZE.

you said don't tell you it is a woodpecker ; we have what we call a God Allmity wood pecker.
Name that because when you see it you say God Allmity what a woodpecker.what you discribed it what they look like. he is about 12" tall with a redish orang head.

don't know if that is what you say or not.they inhabit big woods and pines, when they hit the tree, you can hear it for 1/2 to 3/4 mile.and has a scream sorta like a redtailed hawk.???????????????????????

Go to your favorite search engine and type in Pileated Woodpecker and see if that is what you were looking at. Just how big was this critter? If the wing span was more than abot 20" it was not a woodpecker, a better description would help.

Checked the pics the Pileated woodpecker. Ain't it.
Smoother head dress, about like a hawk maybe. Beak hooked
more like an Eagle.
Wing span? Guessing could be 18 - 24.
I have seen it twice. Once pretty close. Dagdist thing I ever seen.
