VA - Screw-in steps illegal on public land?
I have heard that they are, but haven't seen the code. Anyone know the actual code that says they can't be used?
|
They might be because they do damage to the tree....best thing to do is call the VDGIF and ask...then you'll know for sure and won't get in any trouble....
|
I'm pretty sure they are. No question that it damages the tree.

Climbing tree stands damage the tree. Climbing sticks damage my wallet! :D
|
Very true but I still use a climber....

From the VDGIF website:
" Tree Stands It is unlawful to construct, maintain, or occupy any permanent tree stand on Department- owned lands, National Forest lands, and on Department of Conservation and Recreation-owned or controlled lands. Portable tree stands, which are not permanently affixed, may be used. Use of a full body safety harness while hunting from tree stands is strongly recommended. " Notice how nothing is mentioned here about the use of screw in steps. I have never been able to find anything in the VA Code saying screw in steps are illegal. I have used them for years, although I mainly use a climber now. Used to lease some land from a timber company and they did not allow screw in steps on their property. They said a healthy tree could handle screw in steps but they could be damage their logging equipment or hurt their employees if someone left them in a tree. |
they are illegal..but I still use them. Inour FL swamps our cypress trees start with a base with a diameter of a 20 inch wheel..but after about 2 foot it's only about the size of a pumpkin...nice climbing size..i need one screw step to get over the base..is it wrong? But then is stepping on a 4inch baby pine tree wrong..lol technically yes...
