Calling all southern hunters.
 

Well the Georgia archery opener is just around the corner, but rather than fine tuning and doing last minute scouting, I' ve been spending my free time studying for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). No lawyer jokes please. The warm weather is making it a little easier to bear. The test is Oct 4., and after that it' ll be 3 months of hard hunting.

Getting to the point. I will be applying various law schools accross the southeast and like any good hunter, the hunting situation will play a factor. The schools on my list are UGA, Alabama, Ole Miss, FSU, LSU, Tennessee, and a couple small private schools. My primary interest is whitetail hunting. So i' m interested in any and all info about hunting in the areas these schools are situated. Anything from deer quantity, quality, unusual state regs, availability of public/private land, club membership dues, etc. I know that I won' t get to spend as much time in the woods as i would like while in law school, but spending no time in the woods is not an option.

I can only speak for Ole Miss but there is some awesome hunting in the Ole Miss area, lots of deer and some excellent genetics. The best club or area that I have hunted is in Sardis, MS and that place was amazing. I passed on deer there that would score 140s easy Hunting as a guest with no buck privledges) and the guy I was hunting with killed one in the 150' s and one in the 160' s the only season he was allowed to hunt it. Excellent hunting in that part of Mississippi!

i have lived in sardis since 1979 and hunt in lafayette county,i am not seeing any bucks in the magnolia records for panola county in the 150-160class.are they being hidden?

Ole Miss would be a good choice. Plenty of clubs in the area, Also a lot of government land. A good bag limit, too. Holly Springs National Forest has areas where hunting is permitted.

You can never go wrong by going to FSU. That being said there are plenty of wma around Tallahasse and one county over is Gadsen county which produces alot of nice bucks, mostly because all the land is under control of hunt clubs which seriously manage their herds. Its also only a few miles from the Ga line so you can find some good hunting in your home state.

You may want to think about George Mason or William & Mary, great white tail hunting in Va. Very liberal limits.

The club I was referring to is called 3 Docs and I don' t know what record books a 150 or 160 class buck would qualify for since they were both gun kills. I should go on to metnion that the gentleman, that I hunted 3 Docs with, is from Arkansas and I doubt if he, like myself, has ever heard of the " magnolia records" . I should also add that I have been hunting Mississippi for the last 22 years with a large portion of my family being from there and I have never heard one of them mention the magnolia records and a couple of my cousins have killed some monsters. However, a great deal of people are just like me and wouldn' t enter anything short of a world record. Either way I am not saying that they are behind every tree but I know they are there.

PS 3 Docs is a trophy club with a fine for killing a sub-par buck i.e. a buck with less than a 16" spread, 8 points, and 5" bases. When you shoot down there you better be positive of what you' re shooting at or it' s a $1000 fine and you' re through buck hunting for the year. They leave entire fields of corn standing all winter.

Bama all the way. LOTS of deer (you can legally harvest over 200 per year) as well as one of the top law schools in the country.

I' d throw Texas into the mix but most of the land here is privately held and if you don' t want to pay big bucks you' re probably going to be out of luck.
