About your only chance of putting your dog on birds is at a preserve--pen-raised birds that you have to pay for. Not much inthe way of wild quail anymore, even here is southern Virginia. You might find a few on one of the WMAs, but the odds are pretty slim.

ame with grouse on national forest. There are a few, but populations are way down.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

thats not rain on my parade thats kinda what i figured. I was planning on trying out a preserve sometime this year but if anyone knew about a place i could try out it would help.

I appreciate your help and insight. Im originally from michigan and know some good hunting spots up there but i am new to this area. Thanks again

Tons of grouse up in Pennsylvania. And there are plenty in West Virginia too. And you will even run into them in Virginia. Their populations vary, but the only tried and true way to get on grouse has always been boots on the ground. The more shoe leather you were off, the more birds you will flush.

Quail, of course, is a different story.

You can also waterfowl if you want. Plenty of ducks and geese about, that's for sure.
