VaHDA PRESIDENT'S COURT RESULTS

Public Announcement
(Please Do Not Remove)
As President of Greenbryer Hunt Club, I do hereby make a public statement in reference to an arrest warrant that was issued in December 2011 for the charge of “Trespassing with the Intent to Hunt” on property leased by GBHC. The warrant was issued against James C. Hackett, who is the State Chairman of the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance.
The steps that led up to this event occurred without the prior knowledge of, or approval from the officers of Greenbrier Hunt Club.
A former member of GBHC was temporarily serving in the interim position as Secretary /Treasurer. This former member stepped beyond his limited authority and took it upon himself to contact the land management company (who the club leases from,) to obtain permission to erect a gate adjacent to property owned by Woodhaven Properties LLC. (Mr. Hackett is the owner of Woodhaven Properties LLC.) The former member also took the liberty of placing a trail camera at the newly erected gate to capture photos of anyone going around it. Photos were taken of a person who was using the road for egress around the gate. The person identified in the photo was thought to be James C. Hackett. The local Conservation Police Officer (CPO) was contacted by the former club member, the photos were brought forth as evidence, and an arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Hackett.
Only after the process had become engaged by the former member and the CPO, were the officers of GBHC informed about a warrant being issued against Mr. Hackett. Very limited information and evidence was ever shared with the club officers.
After several courtroom appearances in the Prince George County General District Court, more and more evidence was brought forth. The charge of “Trespassing with the Intent to Hunt” was dropped due to lack of credible evidence and charges against Mr. Hackett were changed to “Simple Trespassing.” It was later proven that the photos taken did not include Mr. Hackett, (they were of someone else). The gate in question and the property line of the Woodhaven Properties tract were just a few feet apart. It has been discovered that Mr. Hackett had legal right to utilize the road to access his property. This means that no crime could have been committed because of this legal right of access.
In short, the charges against Mr. Hackett were in fact – unfounded. It was discovered that the whole incident was a result of a personal conflict the former member has against Mr. Hackett. The officers of GBHC acknowledge the fact that Mr. Hackett has rightful and legal access to his property and all charges have been dropped.
The officers of GBHC offer a public apology to Mr. Hackett for the problems this situation has caused in his personal life and to his reputation as Chairman of the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance by these unfortunate actions from our former member and the CPO
