Hunting the north end of GW national forest in VA.
Wanted to say hi to everyone in the South, I' am brand new to hunting and trying to learn.
Been on the computer researching coyote hunting and about to camo up and go out there. From everyone I have talked to that I know who hunts (not many), they have basically said I just need to get out there, feel out the land and see what I can find, do some scouting.
But I'm still pretty confused especially on the areas of the GW, the website says the Laurel Fork area is for small game, but most people I talked to said get on the road and as long as it doesnt say you can hunt you are good.
I would like to be near Front Royal (close as I can) basically the North Side of the forest.
What am I missing? Or is it that simple?

I've hunted the northern GW for deer a couple of times without success, mainly because I did not do the requisite scouting beforehand to figure out where the deer are moving to/from. It's a big area and some of it is hard to get to.
Regarding where you can hunt, you need to make sure you are inside the GW an not on someone's land, and it is not always clearly marked. If you are on private land, even land that is not posted, without permission, you are trespassing. Whether you will get popped depends on the area and landowner.
I would get some good topo maps and a gps to make sure you know where you are. Don't trust to borders indicated on Google maps, they are sometimes off by quite a bit.

I wont be hunting anytime soon, just need to suit up and start scouting, getting used to that area. But the more I read it just seems so vague, they have areas for certain game, but people at my work are saying as long as it isnt marked not hunting you are good.
Just seems weird to pull off the road and walk in, but I really cant seem to find any info...
