Long story on how I got this guy. But will give the quick cliff notes. He was my #1 hitlist for bow season. first time in the woods with my smokepole and he shows up in the daytime. But I was on the ground walking out to leave and jumped a doe. I flanked her and was actually after her. Never knew he was there. I was using my call to make her think the bush she just saw move was a friendly bush. He was hot and bothered and called him in with my tru talker to just a hair over 20 yards, and there was loud bang. Curiousty killed the buck.

I actually slept in for the morning hunt and didn't order my license till 2pm. Shot him 3 1/2 hrs later.

Wow, sounds like a few of you had a great day! Congrats on the bagged deer.

I hunted all day Saturday in a climbing stand at Pocahontas State Park. The wind switch directions on me after the sun came up (was perfect before then), so I think that screwed up my hunt. Had a nice, wide buck come in from behind me (downwind) and turn around and trot off the other way (tail down). A couple hours later had a very big doe come in from behind me and run up the treeline with her tail down as well. She was only 5 yards behind me but never had a good angle and she moved thru there very quickly. I think they both winded me but not to the point where they were spooked…just enough that they didn’t want to be around. I saw a really nice buck (looked like a 10) on the wood’s edge of the hollow, but he never came in.

Next time…

Thanks guys. I am now in search of the new #1 on my hitlist.. If I get a chance to take him I will. Got a bunch of younger bucks on the property but want to see what they turn into in a few yrs. Got plenty of doe also and some nice mature doe that will fill my meat needs.

I am not a horn hunter, but figure I would give them little guys and girls a chance to at least live 4 or 5 yrs. Have let my fair share pass on this property, I like deer hunting but want something to hunt next yr also. :)

Saw 3 foxes, a dozen squirrels, 7 does, a coyote that I tried to shoot but he was running. I hollared at him & he stopped 80 yds. out but was behind a bunch of brush, turns out that it was a good thing I didn't have a shot as I took a nice 11 pointer 30 min. later at 10:30 a.m. dogging 2 does that should score in the mid-130s.

Great looking buck. Good to hear things are starting to heat up! I'm off starting on the 10th of November and don't have to be back to work until the 21st. With the full moon, I plan to try some midday hunts....can't wait!
