i'm new to this site and this is my first year turkey hunting (usually only hunt duck) so i just wanted to see if anybody on here has previous florida turkey hunting on here and if i can get any pointers.

i've recently just bought my ground blind, decoys, calls, choke tube, shells, and clothing.
the only thing left is any knowledge i can learn before i go hunting

i have a quota hunt at yellow river grassy point unit if anybody has previous experiences there let me know! im also planning on getting the turkey permit and the wma permit and hunting on wma's as well.

Here's my 2 cents. I killed my first FL turkey 2 years ago in Sarasota on a ranch. We called back & forth from sunup, but the gobblers wouldn't come in close. Around mid-day, we set decoys out & yelped ONE series of hen calls, then we sat back & waited. About 15 minutes later, a big ol' bird with a 9" beard sneaked in on my right side towards the decoy. I slowly maneuvered & got a perfect head shot - I thought I would have a heart attack! Most exciting hunt of my life was squeezed into about 10 seconds. The guys STILL laugh about my story - I couldn't breath for about 10 minutes afterwards LOL. Back to my point - I've heard many gobblers returning calls while the sun first rises, but after about 8:00 am, they will be SILENT! They will still come in, even one hour after you call, but they will NOT gobble. So I say set up in a good spot, use your decoys, calls, whatever you have planned, but don't get squirmy after 10 minutes because they don't gobble back - they wont! They will sneak in totally silent from the least expected angle. My buddy whacked one last year 1 hour after we called - nothing but a bright red head in the bushes gave it away. Good Luck to you...

yeah ive read alot about them being quiet and not overcalling. im gonna try and head out to big cypress or jw corbett this saturday and start learning everything by actually doing it! lol

ive heard some people say theyve heard some around the Okeechobee area, so i will prob be heading to jw corbett this weekend and will let you know how it goes!

you hunting on wma or private property ?

Private. The rancher wants us to take as many hogs & yotes as possible. If we hunt deer & turkeys in season as well, he doesn't care as long as we stay legal. I kill more hogs there than anything else. I guess that's why I keep getting invited back.

lol yeah i cant wait for hog season hopefully i can win a nice quota hunt!
