Alright Kiddos I am back from New York, what is normally a beautiful trip to beautiful country was a bit somber this time. We went up for the memorial services for my Fiancee's Grandmother. Probably the first funeral I have shed tears at in awhile. Seems like normally I can do pretty well in keeping them inside, however when her grandfather started crying and they started playing Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes at the same time I was done. (having been in the fire service a number of years and attending way too many funerals, when I hear bagpipes playing amazing grace it is a trigger). She was a awsome woman and will be sorely missed.

On a plus note I did get invites to hunt a number of places up in the Albion area of NY. Maybe a road trip this year for a few days!!

Has anyone been watching anything in their areas worth anything. We have been watching 5 book sized deer for the last few weeks and I can say Oct 3rd will not get here quick enough.

jmnixon 09-15-2009 04:39 PM

eng40sqd I'm also from King George, but currently in lynchburg for college. I'll be hunting between here and king george this fall. Personally I like lynchburg and its surrounding areas for the use of rifles, though I can't wait to go home to use my muzzleloader. My archery season will be spent filming my brother and uncle.

frontstuffer01 09-15-2009 06:13 PM

First post ............strictly hunting Bedford Cty

eng40sqd 09-16-2009 03:11 AM

jmnixon,

Where at in KG are you from? Where abouts in the county will you be hunting> I am trying to talk my buddy into filming during bow season, however the size of 3 of the deer we are going after has him refusing to sit in a tree empty handed, can not say I blame him, not too often you see deer scoring this high around this area.

VA5326 09-16-2009 05:42 AM

In Fairfax. Hunting some honey holes in Fairfax, Fauquier, Culpepeper, and good 'ol Fluvanna. I'm pretty sad to say my hunting will be limited this year due to work obligations, however, I am taking two weeks of vacation time this year to get some serious hunting in. What do you guys think? Last week of October and the first week of November or the first two weeks of November. Can't decide.... Historically, depending on the year, the last week of October, first or the second week of November has seen the most heated action as far as the rut is concerned. Thanks for the responses and good luck to all!

jmnixon 09-16-2009 06:21 AM

I'm located near dahlgren on the machodac creek, amd hunt there on my family farm. I also have a couple bucks I'm trying to get on.

I used to do the last week in Oct. and the First in Nov. however after switching up the last few years I have to say the second week of black powder is when I have seen most of the rutting action around the 'Neck. Just what I have been seeign myself though, maybe be a little different toward Fluvanna and should be close to the same up in NOVA I would think.

Oh ok. Where do you hunt in the area?

eng40sqd 09-16-2009 05:25 PM

We hunt over near the go-cart track. I also have a tract near the middle school and then again off of 694 that I can hunt myself. We also have 1100 acres down in Warsaw, I also hunt about 2800 acres not too far from Oak Grove near Leedstown.

Good luck to all. PM me if you have any questions, as I do not check this board as often as others.

VA Hunter Check-in

Live in Fairfax. Hunting with all three - Bow, ML, & Rifle. I'll be in Fairfax, Fauquier, and Loudoun.

I agree with eng40sqd, the second week of November has been the most productive for me. Seen a fair amout of deer "seeking" during the first week.

MountainHunter 09-26-2009 08:22 PM

Hi everyone. I'm in Loudoun, but don't have anyplace local to hunt around here. I hunt on friends' land in Rockingham County and in the adjoining George Washington National Forest. Beautiful places to hunt!

Question: Does anyone know of a good independent (non-chain) bow shop in the northern Virginia? I have a guy in Rockingham Co. I like, but it's a 2 hour drive and I don't think I'll be able to see him before the season starts in a week.

Swampdog 09-27-2009 02:59 AM

Dang,Thought I already posted in this thread.Hunting down here in Danville ,Pitt.Co. Halifax Co. and some in nearby N.C.

vadeer 09-27-2009 07:27 AM

MountainHunter: I've been going to Bowe's & Arrows on Rt. 1 by Ft. Belvior. B&B Archery in Manassass is also recommended to me. There is also Hoffman Archery in the Gainsville area.

VA Chucker--how is the GWNF? I have always wanted to bowhunt there, but haven't gotten too serious because I hunt Quantico. If I did hunt it, I would go up there and camp out for a few days to make it worth the travel. Please give me some insight as to whether the trip is worth it. Thanks.

Brett

Brett

I've hunted GWNF a few times, only seen does, but i know it holds some nice bucks. I've been up to natural chimneys, its just past bridgewater, in augusta county. I may go up there here in october, my uncle hunts there alot. camping is nice too! Just bought a 25ft pull along for the family.

Lookin forward to this saturday at quantico, i work right on base now, off hot patch road. Seen alot of does at night, and i mean like 30, i was workin late last friday, came through TBS and saw two nice 8 pointers running through the parking lot headin into 5C.

Gonna be a long line friday!

virginiashadow 09-30-2009 05:52 AM

I hear ya Hoyt--I can't hunt until Tuesday afternoon due to work. Best of luck, I hope you arrow something buddy.

VA5326 09-30-2009 07:12 AM

I'll 3rd B&B.

mackesr 09-30-2009 08:54 AM

I am also from good 'ol Orange County Va. I actually hunt on two leases in Culpepper Co. One lease is a 100 acre farm and the other is a 3,000 acre lease on Pulpwood land and a family's trust. We strictly bow and muzzleloader hunt the small farm lease and hunt with everything, including dogs, on the large tract. Best of luck to all you Va. hunters this year!!!! I will be out there this Sat. morning and for once it is supposed to be nice and cool with the possibility of some more rain.

Newcomer to the SE VA area...

I have just moved here from Texas, and I am looking forward to networking with people who are business minded in the outdoor industry.

You can find me in the South Eastern portion of the state, but I am definately not limited to this area.

Looking forward to networking with other folks in the industry.

I live in Gloucester County and never hunted there. I hunt in Charlotte, Surry, and Prince George counties now. Used to hunt private land in Cumberland and Nelson Counties.

I hunt all three venues and love the sport. I have joined a new hunt club this year and it is looking very good. Good guys and land.

Eastern va 10-11-2009 02:11 PM

I live in King & Queen. I hunt in James City and behind my house here in K&Q. It has been so hot here since opening day i have had a few hours in the woods seeing several does and fawns. Im hoping we can get some cooler weather before Christmas!! Good Luck all.

DaRookie 10-14-2009 07:05 PM

Hey, Virginians. I'm hunting in Albemarle Co. this year. I discovered a split limb a week after the season opened, so the bow's in the shop right now :s8:. Hopefully I'll get her back before the weekend.

Anyway, good luck to everybody. Post up some success pics if you can. I love seeing how everyone is doing around the Old Dominion.

o2bebowhunting 10-15-2009 07:47 AM

i live in Woodbridge and hunt in Loudoun, Prince William, Fairfax, madison, Fauquier. I used to belong in a hunt club in Fluvanna but gave it up because of better hunting in nova.

MountainHunter 11-24-2009 10:00 AM

o2Be: I live in Loudoun County, but haven't found any place local to hunt (I hunt in Rockingham County a couple hours west of here). How do you find places to hunt in NOVA?

VA5326 11-25-2009 08:54 AM

It's difficult to find good places. Going door to door during the summer paid off for me a few years back with three places to hunt in nova. The hunting is better here if you only bow hunt and can find someone who will let you use their property. Persistance pays off.... eventually.

rlpsystems 11-29-2009 12:33 PM

Huntin in Franklin and Henry county. There thick in both and I cant wait for each huntin day to come.

mountain hunter--i have just been fortunate enough to either have friends or clients who have decent land in loudoun. i met one guy on this board about 3 years ago he took me to a decent place near Leesburg. I hunt in 3 or 4 spots in Loudoun--mainly aldie, middleburg and leesburg. that guy i met on this board is a really nice guy.
