Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
Another attempt to get more money and seperate hunters....Remove Bear Tag from General Big Game? Leave your comments here... http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/regulations/comment2009/display.asp |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
I strongly encourage all VA hunters to check out the link and leave your comments.
Myself, I amSTRONGLY opposed to adding a special bear lincense. I live in one of the best bear hunting areas of the state. Without question this is an attempt by die hard bear hunters to keep the casual bear hunter out. Spend 2 minutes talking to any bear hunter in this areawho has invested in a pack of dogs and he'll tell you in no uncertain terms that being able to take a bear while deer hunting or taking a bear by any means other than behind a pack of dogs should be banned.[:@] |

RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
popeye, I agree 100%......It is a very very BAD IDEA!!! |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
The word from a few deer hound hunters is they're against it too. They feel it will lead to a additional license for deer/dog hunting. Something must be up they're pretty quiet on it and anything "hound" they usually have lots to say.

RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
I believe this is the worst mistake VBHA has ever made. They have lost some friends with this one. I hate to see us so divided over this. I like to live and let live, but this is a poorly thought out decision. ![]() |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
Bird, it is rather strange the deer hound folks haven't spoke up? Almost wonder if they realize this ain't good for the hound image and are wishing it would go away? After all the attention hound hunting got last year I'm thinking the bear hound boys might should have held off on this one for a few???
Greed will get you every time!!! |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
From what a few have said they're worried that it will open up separating deer and lead to a deer hound license. And if that should happen then other steps necessary for that to work would need to be done. And we all know what that is. Funny the mouthpiece for all hounds in VA. has been quiet on this one.

RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
this law would only lead to more bear problems where i live, they never run dogs here along the shenandoah national park. we have one of the highest bear populations in the state. most deer hunters won't pay 25.00 for a bear permit,so bear numbers would have to climb. i don't need any more tearing up my trash .

RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
This morningI read the new comments posted since I left my no vote to the DGIF site.In total I estimate it's 2 -1 against the new license but I didn't do an actual count. In general the only people in favor of thenew lincense are hound hunters. No surprise there.
I didread a few well thought out comments. IMO the most interesting was an idea to charge $25 if you want to hunt bears with dogs and leave the currentbig game license the way itis for those of us that enjoy the opportunity of taking one without dogs.I've also had conversations with friends who feel that if the DGIF needs to raise additional money, they should increase the non-resident hunting fees to a similar level that is charged by WV, NC and MD before increasing fees for residents. The DGIF admits that it istrying to get the bear population under control by expanding the season. However charging an additional fee seems to contradict what they are trying to accomplish, which is to get more hunters to kill more bears. If anyone can explain this is a logical way,I would be interesting in hearing your thoughts. |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
srwshooter, I live north of you and within 1 mile of SNP. The bear population has exploded in the last 10 years. It is not unusall to see a dozen different bear in one day, in mid-summer. I remember in your area a while back, a lady was killed when she hit a bear in her car. I know others that have hit bears but got lucky they was not seriously injured. Crop and orchard damage is on the rise, leading to more kill permits, and these dumb-azzes what to try to keep other hunters from taking a bear!. After all of the controvery last year to do this now is suicide. VBHA has lost friends with this, even non-members that hunt bear with hounds are against this BS. I believe bow/muzz/rifle hunters WILL get an extension along the SNP and they should!! NO NEW LICENSE!!!! |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
Popeye, Haystack, & Srwshooter,
I totally agree with ya'll on this one! It seems to me that this is a no-brainer. Population control is the so called objective here so why does it make sense to increase the cost of taking a bear? Well, IMO it goes back to the ol' adage "squeaky wheel gets the grease"(of course this being VBHA). These guys take the samepath as a lobbyist group in Washington. They cry foul whenever things are'nt going their way! As you said haystack,;) "division is not what we want" butwe cannot allow VBHA/VDGIF tocontinue to throw the stand-hunter under the bus just because that's how he likes to do things. Charge Non-Residents / Charge hound hunters and leave the rest of us alone. |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
I went and entered my comments on this stupid idea. I hate when special interests have more pull with the damned governement then the everyday citizen. I will just leave it at that for now. I can feel my blood pressure rising!!!
|
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
I see this leading to more poaching, if it were to go thru. At least in areas where bears are serious problems like those above stated.
|
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
Just a quick update for those of you who are interested.
IMO 2 good things have happened in regards to bear hunting. DGIF did NOT approve the change to a special bear license. :D Thr DGIF DID approve a longer seasons for both rifle and MZ hunters :D That's what I call a win-win situation! |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
popeye, it sure is nice to see DGIF listen to us "other" hunters for a change.
To all hunters that took the time to participate in the outcome of this issue ![]() |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
This was passed in 2004. (part B) All that's needed for it to become a reality is a board vote at at VBGIF meeting. You can expect it to be happening in a year or two at the most. Gee don't you remember when this came up in '04? Neither does anyone else.
§ 29.1-305. Special license for hunting bear, deer and turkey; authority of Board to create bear license. A. A special license is required for hunting bear, deer and turkey in this Commonwealth, which shall be in addition to the license required to hunt other game. The fee for the special license shall be $12 for a resident age 16 or older, $7.50 for a resident under the age of 16, and $60 for a nonresident 16 years of age or older, $15 for a nonresident 12 years of age to 15 years of age, and $12 for a nonresident younger than 12 years of age. B. The Board may create a separate special license for the hunting of bear in this Commonwealth. The fee for such a special license shall be $25 for residents and $150 for nonresidents. A person who obtains a special license for hunting bear shall also be required to obtain the state resident license or state nonresident license pursuant to § 29.1-303. If a special license to hunt bear is established by the Board, the special license required in subsection A shall authorize the hunting of deer and turkey only. |
RE: Va thinking of new Bear LIC?
Big Bird,
That's a 5 year lag between being given the authority to do something and attempting to do it. IMO there isn't much desire or support to make the change or it would have been done earlier. I'm not saying that it will not eventually happen but for now it's not going anywhere |
