Biologists recommend deer hunting changes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists propose reducing the deer season bag limit and the number of days for this year' s hunt.
The commission will study the proposals and make a decision at the April 17 meeting at Booneville. If approved, the state' s bag limit will be reduced to three deer. The proposal also includes limiting the bag limit to no more than two bucks or two doe of the three-deer limit.

The statewide bag limit for the 2002 deer season was four deer.

An option of using a zone deer quota system also was presented to the commission to regulate the doe harvest in Arkansas. The option would only affect Deer Zones 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 (which includes the Twin Lakes Area). In theory, this would reduce the number of does taken by half from the previous season. Historically, the success rate in Arkansas has been around 30 percent.

The proposed deer season would shorten modern gun season and split the season into two periods. Modern gun hunting would be allowed Nov. 8-16 in Deer Zones 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 and then again Nov. 27-Dec. 7.

Zones 4A, 5A, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 would begin Nov. 8 and continue through Nov. 16 and then open again on Nov. 22 and continue through Dec. 7.

Deer season in Zones 4 and 5 would be Nov. 8-9 with two more days for Zone 5 from Nov. 15-16. Deer season in Zones 16A and 17 would be Nov. 15-Dec. 25.

Archery season would be Oct. 1 to Feb. 15, and muzzleloader season would be Oct. 18-22. The Christmas holiday modern gun deer hunt would be Dec. 26-28.

There are no proposed changes in the use of dogs when hunting deer, and the three-point rule would stay in place.

Public comment sought

The Army Corps of Engineers' Little Rock District is seeking public comments through April 16 on environmental documents relating to an environmental restoration project in the tail waters of Bull Shoals Dam near the cities of Bull Shoals, Cotter and Fifty-Six.

The reports are a Draft Environmental Assessment and a Draft Finding of No Significant Impact. They pertain to a proposal by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Corps to construct fish habitat improvement measures such as fish shelters, bank stabilization and re-vegetation.

The draft documents indicate the project would cause no significant adverse effects to the environment, and an Environmental Impact Statement will not be required.
