Elk in Va.
If my memory serves me right, I recall that several (maybe just a few?) years ago they transplanted elk to Southwest Va. I havent heard much of anything about the situation since they had transferred them, so I am sure that they didnt hold up well, or were poached. Can anyone provide me with any info.?

RE: Elk in Va.
There are still some and actually 1 or 2 are tagged each season from what the rep at VDGIF says. There is some public land out west in Dickensons County (old mining land), it is about 19,000 acres and you can find it in the FIND GAME section of VDGIF website. The rep said they actually see anoccasional elk on that land but it is better for upland birds and turkey.
Anywaythat's about all I know butif you call the VDGIF you can usually speak to some pretty knowledgeable folks there. |
RE: Elk in Va.
I think there was a effort to transplant Elk, but it was back in the 60's I think and it didn't take. The Elk in VA now are coming over from KY and I thinkit's legalto harvest them during deer season.

RE: Elk in Va.
FYI- Go to the Defense General Supply Center (or whatever they call it now) in Richmond (Bellwood). I don't know how manyelk they have therebut there are alot. The elk that are on that base (not huntable)are from the 60's or relatives thereof. I'd kinda like to see elk start filtering back into the state, but if you have been out west, when one of those beasts gets hit by a car it is a complete disaster. I guess we should be carefule what we wish for.

it is legal to kill a elk on a deer tag if you get the chance.

RE: Elk in Va.
This is from the VA DGIF web site
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/elk.asp Elk [ul][*]Elk of either sex, antlered or antlerless, may be taken during any open deer season using the weapons legal for deer during that season.[*]The taking of an elk counts towards the hunters daily and license year bag limit for deer.[*]Licenses, tag validation, and checking requirements for elk are the same for deer except that elk must be checked at a check station.[*]It is unlawful to destroy the identity (sex) of any harvested elk until checked. Elk may be dismembered to pack it out from the place of kill. The identity of the sex and all parts of the carcass must be present when the elk is checked. [/ul] Successful elk hunters are asked to contact the Wildlife Division of the Department's Marion Regional Office at (276) 783-4860 as soon as possible after killing an elk so that arrangements can be made to collect Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) samples. CWD testing is voluntary. [/align] |
