Thermo cells

Well,
My last trip out I was sprayed down good, and also kept a bottle of liquid repellent..THOSE darn things although they didn't bite were all over my clothes looking for a weak spot in the fabric..At 2:30AM this morning.;)I drove to Wally and picked up the holster, thermo cell and extra assessories ..I'll try that baby out. I'll be putting it to the test in 2 hours..

Chuck,

I like my thermocell. I am also am thinking that the wearing the DET is not a good idea when deer hunting, I think that is part of the reason I did not see anything during archery season. The timesI have seen deer, I was not wearingDET. Next season I plan to use a bug suite and my thermocell, no DET.Thermocells work, but a few mesquetos will still bite. )-:

Good luck,
Chris

Hey,
Just got back from the GS...didn't shoot anything..but my place looks good. I did hear deer early high stepping through the swamp. I also saw a doe driving in .

The thermom cell is a winner..95% of the mosquitoes left me alone...I like the holster and how it holds the extra stuff.
Expensive but nice..I wasn't digging through pockets looking for the bug spray...I was more free to listen and watch. I shut it off at 8:00 AM...and the mosquitoes came back so I switched it back on..The only thing I hate about it...it makes to much noise turning it on..other than that..a great invention...I'm hooked. ;)

Chuck,

I need to get the holster. Did you use it in the holster or did you lay it the bottom of your stand? I will take the click, click it takes to start it up any day. I think the noise of starting it is less likely to get you busted by deer than the if they smell DET. (-: That is great that you saw a doe and could hear deer close.

Cheers,
Chris

Chuck,

I need to get the holster. Did you use it in the holster or did you lay it the bottom of your stand? The holster is 9.97 at Wally..the unit fits snugly ..I have a hook in my tree. I simply hang the holster on the hook..the hook isabout 6 inches above my head. It hangs flat..The holster also hold one extrabutane filler and about 6 scent patches.I also tried hanging it on my stand at different places..6 incheabove my head was best...YOu can also see the mist to get a wind direction read..;)Wally was running low so I thought I'd better get one..especially since I fish at night too.I will take the click, click it takes to start it up any day. I think the noise of starting it is less likely to get you busted by deer than the if they smell DET. (-: Not only that..the click also sounds like an acorn that hit the ground..LOL That is great that you saw a doe and could hear deer close. Yes sir..when I got downI saw more rubs..on decent sized trees. I'm givin git a rest after today..there will be lots of hunters out tomorrow. I may fish Friday..

Cheers,
Chris
Take care Chris,

i love mine. i left it in the garage saturday night while cleaning deer and got ate up sunday. you can hook it to you belt while turkey hunting in the spring......................tony

RE: Thermo cells

I also have a Thermacell but have always used it laying flat. Can you actually hang it vertically?

hycohounds 11-26-2007 10:13 AM

RE: Thermo cells

the holster is kinda designed so that it will still lie flat even when its hooked to your belt. just loop it around the front and it will lay face up. same as hooking it on the side of your climber............tony

I use my thermo cell laying flat, upside down and standing up. It seems to work each way. I have it strapped to my backpack and turn it on in the morning before i head to my stand.

RE: Thermo cells

Don't do what I did last Sat afternoon..I clicked it on...and tens of mosquitoes were everywhere.. I heard the gas running and presumed it was on...[X(][&:][:@]After 40 minutes...[&:],,,I remembered the directions saidto check the little round window to make sure it was buring...it wasn't.:(..I clicked it again...she lit..and the mosqitoes left..[8D]Live and learn.

I love my Thermo Cell.....I have asthma and have attacks around perfumes , etc...BUT I was totally fine with the Therma Cell...kind of expensive but if you live in Florida..it's a must.

WOW!! To get 2 butane cartridges it will cost you 13.00 at Walmart..

:)Look what I bought today off of ebay..he has plenty more my friends.I'll let you know how they work..12 for 22.00 shipping included.;)Click on the picture to get the information.

"These Conair Refills contain 50% more Butane than the standard Thermacell Refills. They are fitted with a standard Butane nozzle like thatused to refill alighter. By using the Conair adapter that I give you without additional charge you can use these refills on Thermacell products and products that were designed to use the Thermacell Cartridges."

RE: Thermo cells

Chuck,

Now if we can just find thermo cell pads we will be set!!! Those Butane will work. They are the butane for portable hair curlers. The trouble I have is the pads go just as fast as the butane and I have not seen just the pads for sell.

Something else I want to try, the drug stores sell mesquto coils that you light with a lighter. The ingredients is the same as a thermocell. But the mesquto coils are much much cheaper. I want to know if I can safety use them in my climber and if they are detectable by deer? But price they are about 1/5 the price of thermcell pads and butane.

Cheers,
Chris

Well..I got the new butane cartridges..they work just fine...I fired it up to see..I will need to make a cut into my holster though:(the butane catridges hold 50% more gas...and are longer.

My brother gave me a Thermocell about 2 years ago, and I only used it for the first time this summer while hog hunting. It does work.

I live less than ten minutes from where I hunt. I start it at the house as I'm leaving and it's warmed up when I get there. Great product, especially in Florida.

I don't turn mine on till I'm set up...and still works quick.;)I strap it to the front of my Summit..It's got a shooting bar across it.

I was wondering if these things were gimicks or not....now im starting to believe in them and i dont even have one yet:D think ill add it to my Xmas list!!

RE: Thermo cells

I will say one thing..they are very expensive to use.

The Therma Cell comes with one butane cartridge and 3 burnable mats..That may last 2 hunts maybe 3.

The refill is 6.97 at Walmart. If I didn't have a decent job I'd be using mosquitoe repellent. The holster that holds the Thermacel is another 10,00

They aren't perfect..a couple mosquitoes may get through but overall...they were great.

One refill 6.97 ..one butane and 3 mats.
Holster10.97
Thermacell 22.97

Total$40 .91 ...whick may be good for 6-8 hunts,

Whereas mosquitoe repellent for one month or more .3.97

i saved money and tied a slim leather string on my thermacell, this way i can hang it from my stand without the $10.00 holster. plus i only use mine during "peak" skeeter time (before sunrise and after sunset). i'll put up with some skeeters. i normally get 6 hunts per pad and a butane cartridge will last me a whole season.

Ok.... its official...Santa now knows i want a thermo cell :DIf your steppin and stalking, im guessing it wont benefit ya much as it wont have time to build a "zone" around you before you take your next step. What other repellants would ya recommend for us stalk'n guys? Anything unscented out there? Still getting the Thermo Cell for those tree stand days;)

in most of the area's i hunt, the skeeters haven't been as bad as previous years so i haven't used the old thermacell as much as i have in the past. i have hunted Green Swamp many many times in the past and i know the skeeters are out far longer there than alot of other hunting area's. last time i hunted Green Swamp the water level was up in the pine tree's in some places. i even had a gator swim under my tree stand on one occaission. i do remember skeeters being fierce all day long in there.

Camo

WOW!! That would freak me out.. I did almost step on one once while goingto my stand..and I was once surrounded by 3 big ones when turkey hunting..I saw no snakes or gators this year..Mosquitoes were the worst ever..If you breathed..you were inhaling mosquitoes.

jlbspd 12-14-2007 11:32 AM

RE: Thermo cells

I second the inhale od skeeters. Look at the upside of things, take a couple pieces of bread (white or wheat, up to you) turn off your thermo cell, kill them suckers as they do just that..sucking on you, and within 15--20 minutes ya got yourself a nice skeeter sandwhich....gone are the days of waking up extra early to make ya something to fill your belly for the days hunt:DAs for the gators....only seen onedriving downPowder Roadopening weekabout 5 ft long. Snakes on the other hand...wheeeewheeeee... more watermoc's than i want to think about so be careful if your near water guys. Rattlesnakes, you may get a warning but watermoccisins, notta... and very dangerous.
