Interesting 1 st day hunt.
I got there at about 5 :15. There was 15 trucks ahead of me. I began chatting with a young man 3 trucks behind me..guess who it ended up being ...Floridabucks Mike.:D
Mike after hunting this morning and talkingto a couple of other hunters..I think I'll stay by the river..;) Small world huh..WEll I got to a trail...but the wrong one..I was one mile deep whrn I had to turn around..I then met a nice hunter named John who walked me to where I was going because he was hunting the same place..I heard some hogs squealing about 8:15 ...that was it. Howeverl when I got back to my truck I met an old timer who was in the same area..I picked his mind with his 25 years of successful Green Swamp hunting and feel very blessed.. He comes from Sarasota so he only hunts it about twice a year.He educated me on the Green Swamp and things to llook for..He was in my hunting area hunting turkey with a long bow...He was aboit 150 yds from me and saw a doe and some hogs.. Chris,,it was good talking with you on the phone this morning. God bless, C7 |

RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
Yes sir..I still consider myself a learner so I'm eager to hear..this 60 some year old FLoridian shared alot of greater than text book information. I figured I must have been in a sweet spot because this man was there..:)he drove quite a ways to get there..over 100 miles.
He diffently told me I need a game cart...he said "You won't be able to drag a deer that far."2 1/4 miles is a long haul. Every hunter I met was more than a gentlemen and overed me incredible information that will save me time...as well as the use of their stands..The main thing he covered was what to look for when looking for the deers' food supply. He said they don't eat acorns all year...what other plants are growing in the area..Cypress nuts, palmetto roots and berries etc. Today I went to an inservice..Flordian Deer Hunting 101[8D] |
RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
Glad you had a good morning. I stumbled into a spot that had very fresh droppings and lots of tracks. Looks promising. I was out of the woods by abouot 10 though. Forgot my most important piece of equipment... DEET. I was practically carried off by the skeets!
BTW, It was good to meet you Chuck. |

That reminds me of a LeonardoDa Vinci quote........" In Order To Excell, You Must Associate With Those That Know More Than You":) Reb.
Amen...I thanked the older man for allowing me to glean from his great experineces...He said he considers himself a poor hunter..40 deer kills and all..He said,"I don't have the patience to be a great hunter or I'd be still in there hunting and not out here." ;) |

RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
I hunted Green Swamp today also. Got a late start due to a lost hunting liscense[:@] Had to go to Wal Mart to get a re-issue. All I saw today was a gator and a big nasty cottonmouth. It was nice to get out in the woods. I got a couple new ladder stands I got at Dicks I want to put up out there, I think I am going to get a game cart to help wheel in the stands and wheel out any game.

Good to hear that people are seeing decent deer. I was not so fortunate, seen absolutly nothing besides a ton of mosquitos. Popped the thermacell on and it worked wonders. Just good to get in the woods though. Good luck to all.

Rob.. Welcome Rob...and you are 100% sure..I'd forgotten what a swarm of mosquitoes looked like .I almost forgot how to assemble my climber [8D]..but yep..the sound of something big behind me braking limbs was exciting. The flitting of 2 Carolina Wrens in the tree next to me was neat as well. Sitting on the tail gate listening to an old timer was priceless. I sat and listened for a good hour. My bottle of luke warm water I'd forgot I had in my truck was priceless.:)I downed it in what big swig.I love hunting. c7 |

RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
Rebel Hog,
Thanks for the heads up on the deet. Good to know. |
RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
Right back at ya Chris..
;) Chris ..my spot is good..I couldn't find my set up so I ended up settign up in the middle of a clearing..not a good idea.I'll be on Powder Sat..but I will be back on the river..it just happens I have my spot on Powder memorized and the acorns there are ripe..The Water Oaks {By the river}should not be falling till Nov. The live oaks on Powder should be falling about now. Mike..I still have my Deet in the package ..I use other kinds. I may take mine back ot Wally and get my money back. |
RE: Interesting 1 st day hunt.
Thanks for that reminder Rebel Hog. I try to avoid DEET on myself and kids as much as possible. Anything that will melt plastic like DEET does can't be good for your skin either[:o]
