Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Mosquitos are a constant issue for me here in Florida. I have always used 100% deet with good results, but often when the skeets are especially thick I have that constant buzzing in my ears from skeets that don't land but are still annoying as heck cause of the noise.
I've heard mixed reviews on therm-o-cells. What do you guys think about them? Any other thoughts on how to keeps those pesky things away? |
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Two thumbs up on the thermocell....I have two in the camper, one on the boat, two at home and one in my hunting backpack.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Everyone I know that uses them, loves them...
I have yet to use mine...Had it for 2 years or more too! I just try to stay as high as possible.. itsjust another thing to carry...and keep track of.... Bow hunting down here in florida is sometimes unbearable.... but i still go |
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
the thermocells work really well as long as it isn't windy and you're staying in one place.
|
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
I use repellent..I buy the kind with a screw off lid. .this way there is no spray sound..I just put some in my hand and apply it on me.
|
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
thermacell is the best......and if its windy, the skeeters arent gong to be bugging ya too much anyway.
|
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
The best invention since the wheel! I make sure I keep several refills in stock.
|
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Buy one, i won' sit in a swamp without mine. I hate that buzzing too, I have had deer walk up behind me unknowingly because of this. Remember to switch the pad often, learn from my mistakes!
|
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
I won't go out without it! I read some reviews on it from ESPN that said it wasn't good, but I have used mine for 3 years now and it works like a charm. Only concern is the scent. They say they are scentless, but I can smell it so I know the deer can too. But, if it is between spooking a deer and gettting carried off by mosquitos, I'll take the spooking most times. And I am a nut about scent. I will will wear my scent lock and under clothes in 90 plus weather.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Hi Chuck,
You may want to test it out before you head out in the wild. I don't have asthma, but serious allergies and it does cause me to cough sometimes if I get a big dose of it in my mouth or nose. Better safe than sorry! Steve |
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Another firm believer in the Thermacell, just remember, it takes a few minutes to warm up.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
My advice is to use a bug suit as well as a Thermacell. Firm believe in the Thermacell. Was turkey hunting one morning in the swamp and forgot to turn it on for a while. (Got distracted when turkeys started to gobble) Was wearing a bug suit and the only part of me that was exposed was my elbow when it was bent. My elbow got eaten up before I realized it. Popped the Thermacell on and the bugs were gone. Never leave home, camp without it ever since and always turn it on as soon as I get in the woods/swamp.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Thanks for all the input on the thermacell. I bought one today and am excited to not have that annoying buzzing in my ear. I think I can stand being bit more than I can stand that incessant buzzing.

ORIGINAL: Chuck7 I use repellent..I buy the kind with a screw off lid. .this way there is no spray sound..I just put some in my hand and apply it on me. Also with this technique you will not make the mistake I made a few years back! I had a small spray bottle of repellent in my shirt pocket. The skeeters were starting to get around my ears and face. So in my sloth/stealth like slow movement I slid my hand up into my pocket and removed a spray bottle (while watching an area like a hawk). I eased it up toward my face, closed my eyes and sprayed at point blank range! Instantly I remembered that I also had a spray bottle the exact same size and shape that contained coon piss in it in one of my pockets! There are a bunch of things in your life that you can lie to yourself about..... Coon piss sprayed on your face does not stink or burn is not one of these! [:'(] Oh and btw.... you should rinse it off before it dries! It seems to have something in it that will cause your skin to turn red. |
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
LOL That would be bad..:DAfter pricing the thermo cells..I think I'll stick with the screw off bug spray. It has always worked for me and I'm one of the first at the gate.{ So weare talking 2 hours in the dark.} The spray is only about $3.00 and last the entire season..I don't hear much buzzing after they check out the repellant.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
Yea they are pricy--we caught ours on sale at a winn-dixie store!!! But they work great!!!
NC Wildman--sorry but that made me about roll in the floor--If i tried that stunt where i hunt i would have company in the tree!! |
RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
The cell works providing there is no wind but the bug suit is best when the suit is extra-extra largeso when you bend your arms and legs and all over body it does not strech tight on your body parts. When I bow hunt in SJRMA head waters I wear only the bug suit, darkunderwear and boots so I don't suffer heat stroke. The buzzing is a bit of a bother but I have learned to or at least try to ingnore it.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
I simply walk to my stand...Climb the tree. I have a skinny pump type bottle in my shirt pocket. I'm real careful not to drop it. I unscrew the lid..put some mosquito repellent in my hand in apply it. After it's on..I don't hear buzzing or nothing.Be careful not to put it in your eyes or mouth. I screw the lid back on and carefully slide it back in my pocket..Cost..abpout 3.00 Walmart sells it in the camping assessories.

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps

I think its called DEET .It's in my truck..I didn't wantto forget it.:) Nothing like forgetting bug spray or flashlight in a swamp.[X(] |

RE: Mosquitos in FL Swamps
I am a born and bred Floridian and have fought mosquitoes all my life. I don't know how we ever hunted or camped without a thermacell. I hope the guy that invented them is a billionaire! I have killed multiple deer, hogs and turkeys with one burning beside me and have not had an animal spook from one yet. Forget about the deet, the sprays, lotions and the mess. Get a thermacell! It also works pretty good as a body warmer in cold weather without the pad installed. The only folks that won't recomend one are the people who don't ownone.
