South Texas folks, got a question.
 

I hunt north west Texas, but this weekend I was in Austin and noticed something strange. I saw 4 fawns who still had spots. Is this normal? I have never seen a fawn with spots this late in the year. Just curious.

may not be the norm, but I know the deer can still be "serviced" into late Feb.

Lets keep in mind that the Hill Country of Texas (around Austin) is famous for its exotic animals. There are alot of ranches in the Hill Country that cater to exotic hunting and what you saw was maybe and Axis Deer. There are a bunch of them up that way. What do you think?

That is what I thought at first. It was close to the Mullins exotic ranch on 183. But I was on private land that is not fenced. They also looked to small for Axis, but could have been some young ones that got loose. I just found it odd. You are probably right. I couldnt see them very well. The first one was about 100 yrds off and I had low powered specs. The others came late in the day and were even further.


Some thing I did noticed was the size of the deer. Much bigger than when I use to hunt the hill country years ago. I use to hunt junction and it seemed all the deer were little, but the ones I saw in Austin were huge. I wish I had a gun. I was simply watching.<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

some places in the hill country are starting to do a better job of managing their deer, thus the size is going up. Since our doe population has been brought under control at our lease I would say the body weight of the bucks we kill has went up an average of 10-20 pounds over the last 5-7 years. Of course we are also starting to kill older deer as well.
