In most areas of Alabama we have way too many deer, not just does. If you restrict the size on bucks there will be that many more deer in the woods, TOO many. A couple of weeks ago I had 14 small bucks in the patch at one time, I didn't shoot one, but I have been carrying my grandsons hoping one of them will shoot one of them. I would vote no on the statewide antler restrictions, just because there are too many deer as it is, manage or shootwhat you wantto on the land you have permission to hunt.
Timber, whydo we have Antler Restriction in FL? You know, the 5" above the hair line. Do we haveless bucks to doe ratio?

I don't really look at the 5" Fl rule as a antler restriction. I think it was put in place a long time ago so hunters would look closer at the does/young bucks before shooting.

The 5" rule was put in place to keep the all mighty dog hunter from using the "it's brown, it's down" method of hunting. We have a game warden that goes to church/family friend or ours and I asked him about that one time and that was his answer. It makes them think twice before shooting at a running deer or a brown blobunless they know what it is.

There is not as significant of an imbalance of does to bucks in Florida as a whole as there is in Alabama as a whole. There was an article in Woods and Waters or one of these smaller magazines that caters to the SE a while back that showed the numbers and talked about that a little. It was around last year when the Game and Fish guys were voting on the corn stuff and all. Next time I go to the barber shop I'll see if he still has it in his pile of magazines.
