RE: Mid-western hunter needs some help

Little particular, but I'd go with Kentucky. Have never hunted arkansas, so I dont know about the quality of deer there, but all my buddies in AL want to come up here and hunt with me in KY and IL.

As for the rut. It is getting close here in w. KY. also in IL.

Good luck to you.

There are good deer in Arkansas, but if you are going with the odds, you are better off in KY. Yes we have some big deer here, but it would be like one nicebuck (I mean wearetalking quality ) : to every 250 average to small bucks.

We do have the 3 pt rule, which has helped to protect the 1 - 2 year old bucks. It has been in effect for several years now, but all that did was put a lot more pressure on our older bucks. The 3 pt rule should have been killed after about 4 - 5 years, and then implemented a new restriction to protect the 2-4 year old range deer. By the fifth year we should have been taking more spikes etc... for about two years to balance out the herd. It did not happen, and now mature deer are harder to find and the yearlings have taken over. My lease is lousy with 3 pt and under bucks. OH well I guess you cant have everything.

P.S. - The average body size for a 3 pt. and up buck is running around 135 - 150 lbs. Down here in South Arkansas, it runs about 110 - 120 lbs.

Good luck in KY.

God Bless
