Black Tongue, what is it?
 

I just talked to a farmer I know. He says the deer are scarce around his place which is very unusual and same said by many other hunters and farmers alike around here. They say the deer they have seen should be getting fattened up by now but they look extremely thin/boney. I have noticed the samething, thin and few. Some say its black tongue. What is it and is there any way how to tell they have it?

BowNC, I have also been told its mother nature thining out the inbreeds.
But you can be told anything when you don't know.
But I do remember in the 70's something wiping out a lot of deer in Randolph County, NC. It took about 2-3 years before we noticed a come back. Then, I thought they called it Black Tongue, which I could be mistaken, you know, a senior citizen moment. I just hope it does not take out alot this time.

I dropped a doe sat. afternoon. She was about 3 years old and had alittle fat on her but not what I expected. She wasn't as bad as some I've seen this year so maybe its not the dreadful disease or I was just lucky. She came out with 3 others which looked about the same size. Still nothing like they should be this time of year. Should have fattened up more by now. Another friend mine dropped a 9 point saturday and he said that the deer was pityfully thin in the rump. Looked like the deer was starving to death he said so, he put him out of his misery. He said the meat looked alright and found corn in his belly so, he was eating somewhat and nothing out of the ordinary except, part of his heart was missing.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have always heard that there was a major outbreak of blue-tongue in the early 50's or late 40's that pretty much eliminated the whitetail deer in Al., Fl., and Ga. I know there was a major stocking program sometime around the early 60's.

I suppose it will be a tale-tale come about mid November. They should be in rut here. Maybe they will show more activity. I'm with you BowNC, sure would like to see some colder weather. It also helps keep those pesky skeeters/gnats off me. Dag burn things, I have to strap myself down in my stand to keep them from draggin' me off. Shoot sometimes I can't hear to good from all the buzzin' around my head.
Easy now, its the bugs doing the buzzin not my brain I think.
