I used to use the same gun with 180 grainers, until I got a lighter more accurate bolt action .270.

I hunt with a Remington 742 Woodsmaster carbine in .30-06, with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x42 scope.

Nice rifle!

I've also got a Savage 110 in .30-06 that I may use this year with Remington's Managed Recoil ammunition for an upcoming doe hunt.

I hunt deer and bear with a FN model 24 in 30-06, and a Steyr in 30-06, both of them late 60's wood classics. The FN has a Mauser action, sweet, and the Steyr has an extra hair break trigger on it.

Browning BAR 30-06 with Remington Core-lock 150 gr.

I had the same gun in .270, but I hunt more in the woods and rarely have a shot over 75-100 yds. so I like the heavier 30-06 which would be less likely to be deflected by brush obstruction. Also when I got the .270 I was still hunting with my dad all of the time (college days) and he had a 30-06. The thing about owning a .270 and a 30-06 is that both rounds will chamber in either gun. This wouldn't be that much of an issue firing a .270 round through a 30-06 (safety wise), but if you were to try and fire a 30-06 round through a .270 I would imagine that the result s would be bad. We never had any issues, but my dad was always very concerned that our ammo may somehow get mixed up. So I went back to the gun shop and traded for one like his.

I know that this was off topic a little, but I just felt like sharing this morning.;)

RD,
If a .270 cartridge will chamber in a .30-06 rifle, or a .30-06 cartridge will chamber in a .270 rifle, something is very wrong with that gun. Each isdesigned, by length and diameter,NOT to chamber in the other caliber gun.

RE: Any 30-06 users?

Keys,

Are you sure about that? Because the only difference between the .270 and the 30-06 bullet is the diameter of the neck and the bullet itself. Other than that the casing dimensions are the same. I neverthought of it as a defect, because I know of other instances where this can happen. For instance my Sig pistol is a .40 S&W, however the same clip is used in both the .40 S&W and the .357 Sig. Actually you can buy a new barrel and convert from one caliber to the other. Plus, I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the gun. Making sure that you have the right ammunition is one of the NRA’s “Ten Commandments of Firearms Safety” for this very reason.

Actually, the case on a 270 is longer by about an
Eighth of an inch.

Yes, I am very sure. A .308 bullet will not go into a .277 throat, and the .270 case has a longer neck than the .30-06. If headspace is correct, a .270 will not chamber in a .30-06. And, you canimagine what would happen if a .30 caliber bullet was fired into a .277 barrel.
By the way, the .280 Rem. and the .35 Whelan are also based on the .30-06 case, and, in a properly chambered and headspaced rifle, they will not chamber into any of the other calibers.

RE: Any 30-06 users?

Fine, maybe my recollection is incorrect. I was just trying to point out that if you own two similar calibers you need to be careful to keep you ammo seperated. I found the artcile below while cruising the internet last night, so incidents can occur.

From - Firearms handling refresher
Part III: Rifles
By Massad Ayoob

Make sure you use the right ammunition. One of the NRA's "Ten Commandments of Firearms Safety" is to only carry one type of ammunition on your person so as not to get the wrong cartridge into a firearm. This can't always be done with defensive weapons. The last time I went on a raid I had .38/.357 ammo for mybackup revolver, .45 ammo for my service pistol, and 9mm ammo for my issue MP5 submachinegun. However, when hunting with high-powered rifles, it really is agood idea to only have one type of rifle ammo on your person. I don't thinkyou're going to get your revolver ammo mixed up with your .30/06 rifle ammo. Let me give you an example. At my gun club not long ago, a member was sightingin his .270 and .308 hunting rifles when he suffered a serious accident. With ammo for both rifles on the shooting bench at the one hundred-yard line, he apparently just reached out for more cartridges by feel without checking the box, and loaded .308 Winchester cartridges into his .270 Winchester rifle. You would not think a .30 caliber bullet would fit in a .27 caliber hole. However, the .270 is a "long action" cartridge, the length of a .30/06 round, and is in fact a "necked down" .30/06 in concept. The .308 Winchester cartridge, a.k.a. 7.62mm NATO, is essentially a shorter version of the .30/06 round, designed to allow "short actions." Thus, the .308 cartridge was shorter enoughin overall length that it fit in the long .270 chamber. Having the same casehead diameter, the rifle's mechanism picked it up and chambered it with no problem as the shooter thrust the bolt forward and locked it down. But, when he pressed the trigger, all hell broke loose. The .31" bullet DIDN'T fit the .27" barrel, and what would normally be 50,000 or so pounds per squareinch pressure contained in the ordnance steel firing chamber * business as usual when firing a high powered rifle * instantly skyrocketed and created catastrophic pressure. To put it simply, the gun blew up. Pieces of the strong, high-quality bolt action rifle flew everywhere, and particles of metal and burning gunpowder were driven back into the shooter's face. He had committed the cardinal sin of lowering his shooting glasses to get a better view through his telescopic sight. The result was serious eye damage.

My father gave me hisWin. mod 70 30-06 spingfield last year, he usedit as a teen in Wyo.I made a dbl lung shot onan 11 pointer with a 165 grain rem. rnd on the buck while he was walking behind a doe at about 40 yds away. he took 4 or 5 more steps and fell over dead. dont think he knew he had been shot.
This year I shot a nice 4 pointer with my Rem. Mod.78 Sportsman with a 100 grain round, a single lung and liver shot. It ran 40 yards throughALOT of mountain laurel and 15 minuts later I found him.
The 30-06 isalittle heavier but alot less work once you shoot the animmal.

Almost the same as cutter81.Savage 110...Simmons Pro 50(2.5-10x50)Winchester 150gr..either power points or ballistics..whatever mood I'm in that year.Shortestshot...under the tree.Longest shot 185.Average shot 40yds.;)I'm thinking about getting a 270WSM,and letting my wife keep on using the 30-06.

RE: Any 30-06 users?

Reefdonkey,It has always been my impression that the 25-06,270,and30-06 are the same casing with it necked down to the proper diameter.I have seen them side by side, and I am with you. They seem to be the same length to me.My 30-06 will chamber my friends 270 shell. So,I guess I'm agreeing with you. There is nothing wrong with my gun.I will check it again to make sure, and I will report back whether I'm right or wrong.:D

I think Simmons doesn't get the recognition they deserve.Maybe they will now with the new flashy line of scopes.Same withsavage rifles. The main key is to invest in a high quality set of rings, and mounts. And to make sure every screwis coated withloc-tite.And alsomake sure the rings are only touching the tube, and not the bell,or eyepiece.I have went through all of that drama.[8D]
