Looking for hunting land in VA

Just seeing if anyone knows of any hunting land in Spotsylvania or nearby areas? My hunting spot is not-so-slowly being eaten up by development, and the deer population is shrinking. Please contact me if you know of any.

Thanks,
Darrell

Hey Darrell...

I'm not sure of any good hunting land up around that area. Most of it is probably locked up tight by other hunters and/or clubs. I'd double check with VASavage270, since he lives up near Stafford.

We all tried to get something going this year out near Amherst, but it didn't pan out. [:'(]:(

This year I'm planning on a trip out to the George Washington Forest and even spend a few days hunting out there. There are some MONSTER deerout there from what I've heard!

Hunting lang I don't know if I should cheer or cry...lol however it is possible to get together and do a hunt a WMA, Quanitco etc..

I'm with Butch find a good area that we all can hunt for some it may be a bit of travling, but if your a hunter as myself the traveling is nothing! Darrell if you happen to run across any land hold on to it, we've been trying for years.

Lets see, you have quantico, fort ap hill, ft belvoir (bow only), rapidan wildlife management areas, george and jefferson national forests,. gladfelder papermill company land, etc etc. land is there to hunt, you just have to find it.

Butch, I think I may give GW Forest a try...have you ever hunted there? Do you know if any special permits etc. are needed?

I'm gonna see if I can get word out and maybe find a lease on some property to hunt or something. I'm not much of a fan of public hunting grounds, the last one I went to was soooo crowded...I'm not a big fan of crowds and gunfire ;).

As for Quantico and the WMA's and stuff, how do you go about hunting there? Do you have to get permission? Are there only certain areas you can hunt?

Thanks,
Darrell

Good luck with finding some land. I know here in williamsburg they have been in tear down all trees and build $500,000 homes modefor about 10 years now. My hunting rights are down to just 8 acres behind a industrial park me and a friend still hunt. With land being about 8 bucks a acre to lease you have to join a club or pick up the scraps these days.I did kill 4deer included a 11 pointer with a 23 in spread on the liitle 8 acres last year. You gotta do what you gotta do.

this is the site for fort ap hill. i hunt here all the time, looks complicated, but it is really not that bad to hunt there. you do have to register your vehicle, all weapons you are going to use on the post, and get a virginia state police background check before you can hunt there, once that is complete it is easy, just completed all of mine today in about 30 mins (after i had sent in for the background check and got it back) most of the registration forms are online at this site, just fill them out and submit.

Same here Eastern. There used to be about 150 acres surrounding my parents 5 acres that we had permission to hunt, was LOADED with deer. Over the last few years it's just been getting shaved down. I would guess now there's probably 50 acres left, and the deer population must be moving on or has just been overharvested, but the once heavily used trails are starting to grow over and no new sign is showing up. Me and my brother both have trail cameras along the trails and in 3 weeks we gotone picture of a small buck...that's it.

Lee, thanks for the info, I've never hunted anything but theprivate property I was just describing so the WMA's and all is new to me. I'll check those out and hope for the best!

Thanks,
Darrell

Hey Darrell...

I have never hunted the GW Forest, but have driven through it a few times. It is MASSIVE as far as terrain goes. Not only that, it gets wicked steep in too. Goonto a topographical webiste (topozone, terraserver, etc...) and look at the terrain from Staunton west, all the way down beyond Roanoke and further south. I've heard that some of the terrain is real rugged andstrenuous to hike up in. But it is worth it for the quality of the deer.

All you need for the GW Forest and/or Jefferson Forest is the federal stamp (available anywhere or on the VDGIF website in their license section. I think it's $12 bucks or something like that).

I'm gonna see if I can get word out and maybe find a lease on some property to hunt or something. I'm not much of a fan of public hunting grounds, the last one I went to was soooo crowded...I'm not a big fan of crowds and gunfire ;).
You and me both!!! This season I am going to try to will myself NOTto hunt the public land WMA's! [:'(] I may come across as a whining little crybaby or something, but, hey - the public WMA's that I have been to are a total joke! 9000 hunters all over the place! I remember reading a quote one time from a guy who wrote in something about "Sure thing, I got there before sun up. I gotup in my tree stand and got all situated. But once the sun came up, there was so much blaze orange around, it looked like a darn pumpkin patch!" To me, that quote says it all about shrinking hunting lands, and overcrowded, overhunted public land. [:'(]

I went to the CF Phelps WMA area last Saturday. Ran into several crossbow hunters, but I was out there for squirrel, of which I heard or saw none. All of the acorns were dried and dropped. I could see the place getting crowded fast, though. I'm going to hit the dove fields there this Saturday and after that I think I'll focus on the GW Forest.

RE: Looking for hunting land in VA

Phelps WMA on a Saturday? Oh wait, it's not general firearms season (yet). ;)

Yeah, more and more people are migrating westward to the nat'l forests and state forests to get away from the crowds. I lookedat the huge Goshen/Little Mountain WMA that is way out towards Staunton and saw that it is the biggest, longest, most square mile acreage of any WMA around! It's a bit of a drive, but it might be worth it in the long run.

Regarding the Washington/Jefferson Nat'l Forests... I was wrong in my previous post above. The Nat'l Forest hunting stamp is only $3.50 (not $12). Oops, sorry.... [:-]

Yeah, I purchased a national forest stamp, along with some extra deer tags, too :] I'm on the night shift this month, and I work until 0500 SAT morning, so I won't be going out until the first weekend of November again, and for pheasant, and maybe whitetail, too,if rifle season starts then. But, I don't plan to go back to the Phelps, but to the GW Forest down near Winchester somewhere. If you're into it, drop me a B-mail and we can combine forces!

I have hunted GW National forest a couple of years ago and It is a huge area ,me and a hunting buddy packed our stuff in on a deer cart and stayed for a week, we both saw deer everyday and only a couple of other hunters the whole week, We are going back again the second week of Nov. We have been planning this trip for months and always look forward to the challenge.Do your homework before you go and you can find public land with good deer populations and few hunters.

How's the turkey spread there? Farmville is about 2 1/2 hours from where I live in Alexandria. That's about what I'd be driving anyway for very good hunting land to the WMAs (if there is a such a thing here in this state).

RE: Looking for hunting land in VA

Farmville has an excellent turkey population. I've hunted there for years and there are many a bird there. Also some big bucks, but the when the pressures on, they head to the swamp near us.

Darrell, my brother has 50 acres in Spotsy...I usually only hunt it the last 2 weeks of the season and only a couple of times....there are some deer in there, noone else hunts there although the neighbors sometimes run their dogs through there, this is the last year he will have it....let me know if you would like to hunt there the last couple of weeks of the season, I could meet up with you..also, if you would like for me to meet you at Quantico one Saturday or after work, I will help you get through the process of getting set up to hunt there, it would be my pleasure.

RE: Looking for hunting land in VA

coolbrze, I hunt Quantico exclusively...I am not very good at going to peoples door and asking them to hunt. I would like to find a spot close.
