How do you guys hunt in the heat????
Tomarrow is the opener for bow season here in NJ and it is supposed to be 80 degrees. How do you guys cope with the heat (and the chiggers)? My buddies dont even feel like going out tomarrow even with a piece of property that has nearly 50 deer per square mile. I am looking forward to a bowhunt in Maine in a couple of weeks they already have frost in the morn.

Big Mills I don't know how they do it! I moved down here near Charlotte, NC last year from WV and it don't get right for hunting down here until december. Bow season has been open since the 7th or 8th of sept and i ain't in no hurry to go out there and get eat up.

Bow season opened today in Texas and high temps. are going to be in the low 90's. You sweat alot and deal with lots of mosquitos, luckily it's much cooler at dawn. I wish I was out there but some of us have to work.

walk to the stand, wipe, climb, wipe, settle down double wipe.watch for deer wipe.
you need an extra large diddy bag to hold all the wipes. I have an old alumnum army cantine,I fill full of water an put into the freezer.I have one of those hot-cold bag.I made a wrap for the cantine,as I go to stand and climb the ice melts and I have cool water all afternoon. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat????
Sweat is the biggest odor producer there is so I avoid it at all costs. I will pack my clothes in my backpack and carry my stand to the tree wearing only shorts and shoes. Once there and up in the tree I change into my camo, LOTS of odor eliminator sprayed on my head and body and backpack.
Another thing....take your time, walk as little as possible and as slow as possible, everytime you feel yourself breaking a sweat, stop and rest, then more odor eliminator. <img src='http://communities.msn.com/_Secure/0KwAAADsOaDdtgkcDr1nY4RcAK6lPF*ayvmG!e6*iM1LTmQvlc 54Zk6fPpfu!2ro8DHlXdaP1DG0/4pt.jpg> |

Oh yeah, eat lots of garlic and onions and you wont have to worry about the ticks and chiggers, I haven't had them in years....unfortunately, I haven't had a kiss from the wife in about that long....
Good thing the heat of the season lasts only a few weeks <img src='http://communities.msn.com/_Secure/0KwAAADsOaDdtgkcDr1nY4RcAK6lPF*ayvmG!e6*iM1LTmQvlc 54Zk6fPpfu!2ro8DHlXdaP1DG0/4pt.jpg> |

Lots of ice if you shoot one.As for the bugs do what you can and butch up. I don't like them but in Texas if it don't sting you ,it will stick you. I hunt in Llano (hill country) and they have everything bad snakes, spiders, scorpieons ect...I keep a bean bag around my neck(out of the frezer) it last a little while and does help keep me cool

I wear a T-shirt and shorts underneath my super lightweight mesh camo pullover and pants. But even then, I ROASTED on opening day here in Virginia! I had to give up by 10:00am. Come on cool weather!!!! :)

got a nephew who hunts down in louisiana. he has one of those mosquito suits with the mesh underneath. says he wets it before getting into the stand then puts it on. like air conditioning.
Hey, size may not matter but it sure IS nice! |
RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat????
I usually wear a pair of shorts or thin pants & take a 1/2 gallon jug of ice water. And keep plenty of water in the truck for the dogs. I don't see how anyone can sit in a tree for more than a couple of hours at the time, dog hunting is the only way to go for me. Nothing against any of you tree climbers, I do it once in a while during the week after work, but my Saturdays are reserved for the hounds.

RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat????
I hunt in South Florida where its pretty hot until at least November most seasons. For hunting gear I use long sleeve cotton camo shirts, cotton camo pants, and Rocky snake boots. I spray my gear down with Repel Permanone which takes care of most of the mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers. The Permanone last for two weeks or a couple of washings. For the exposed skin areas I use a high percentage of deet repellant. This is the coolest setup that I have been able to come up with that still gives good protection. Depending on the hunt I also use military camo on my hands and face which is cooler than using a face mask and gloves. As others have mentioned walk fairly slow not to workup a sweat, hunt high and watch the wind.

RE: How do you guys hunt in the heat????
Preparation, I always take my skeeter suit, thin light weight and it sure helps keep them skeeters off somewhat. Pack well, in my rumpsac I'm sure to have plenty of power-aid, you'll cool off somewhat once you're in the stand and stationary. Hunt early morning, its usually the coolest. But like anything else about the woods, hunker down and deal with it. After awhile you'll sorta kinda get use to it and know what to expect.
