Default 308 yote round

i was thinking of hitting the yotes hard next winter. I think i would like to get a 308 because of its inherited accuracy and power. i think a good heavy bullet such as a barrns tripple shock will not do very much damage because it is ment to penitrate deep on heavy animals so it wont have time to expand on a yote. is my thinking correct? or do you think it will cause too much damage

the reason i was thinking 308 also was because i dont want to blow tones of money on a gun that i can only shoot yotes with.

I dont know, Ive never tried a anything big like that on a yote, but my guess is it will tear them up but if you're not keeping pelts go for it. I think you should go for a 243, thats a real good varmint cal and you can use it on deer and stuff. Also Id look into a 25-06, thats real good for accurate long range shots. Good luck and good hunting!

I have a .308. I love it. I used a 110 varmint load and it knocked the yote off it's feet. But it DID make a mess. I'd say a heavy grain like 150 or 180 would do the trick. Actually you might even want to look into the 168 match round. It's accurate and not designed to expand like a hunting round. It should just pass through with 2 little holes in the pelt, one comming and one going.

Gopher Slayer, your way of thinking is correct. When I first got my 300 Win. Mag, I took it calling a couple of times, mostly to get accustomed to the rifle before big game hunting with it, BUT I shot 3 coyotes using 180 partitions, and the damage was no worse than what I often get with my 22-250. With that said, how ever, all the coyotes I hit were broad side shots and I did not hit shoulder. I do beleive that if you hit a coyote facing you, the bullet from your 308 may well go all the way through and leave a gapping hole at the other end, or if you hit shoulder on a 1/4ing to you shot, I'd guess a big exit hole.
If that guns all ya got, hit'em and you will hit 'em hard!!

I would use some 155 grain FMJ rounds. The FMJ bullet will not expand on a coyote, but will still do enough damage for a quick kill on the little buggers.

I know of a few people here that use fmj's for most of their varminting needs, to minimize pelt damage.

the 308 would be fine with heavy bullets and i don't think you would need to use the barnes lots of bullets cheaper then that that will do what you are asking. but if you are buying a gun just for yotes i wouldn't get a 308 but a 223, 22-250 or 243. all of these are easy to shoot, cheaper rounds, and will perform better then the 308.

i wouldn't suggest anyone to use the fmj bullets. almost all of the time they will past through without opening up or losing much speed and either richichay (i know i can't spell) or just continue to head downrange and who knows what it is going to hit. not very safe. also because the bullets don't open up at all most of the time the yotes will run 50-150 yards before pilling up and with that small of a hole going in and out their will be no blood trail to follow

killer's got a point on the blood trail. I don't own one yet, but I strongly recommend a .243 for the yotes. I've done my research and found them to be as versatile as everybody is saying. Anywho, just my two cents.

i also agree with the .243 suggestion, my little brother is getting one and although they're at the low end for deer, they can be used.
